Benefits of Excelsior degree
#1
I am posting an update regarding my son and the BS in General Business degree he obtained from Excelsior College on August 2010. It seems like yesterday when I first made the post, "Looking for online B&M schools accepting 90+credits" (and on other forum) and the frustration he was having with his local university. At first, I had some concerns about him going to Excelsior because of his intentions of wanting to attend graduate school to obtain a Master of Architecture degree and know some of the programs are very selective.

Well, after spending countless months preparing for his GRE exam and his portfolio, which I must say was blown away with his work. He has been accepted into the following schools.
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
Washington University - St. Louis (60% of tuition scholarship)
University of Oregon
waitlisted with University of Cincinnati and Virginia Tech.

It appears my son is learning toward Washington because of the scholarship, and considering a dual major in either a Masters in Urban Development or Construction Management. I attempted to talk him into an MBA, but it after reading about MUD I would think this would tie in better with his M.Arch degree.

WOW! It sounds like you and your DS really made a great choice and thank you for coming back to let everyone know.

So many people from time to time pop on to wonder about the validity of the Big 3 degrees and as your DS and many others have proven, it doesn't matter. RA is RA, whether you took 5 years and 100k to complete your degree or 9 months and 5k to get it.

Great job! You must be so proud Smile

That is impressive!! How long did it take him to finish up his degree at Excelsior? I'm just amazed at how much people are saving with the big 3 and all the great places they end up working or attending for grad school.

It took him around 9 months to get everything completed. He also took additional courses beyond his BS degree to work on his graduate portfolio and additional classes in Physics. By going the Excelsior route from beginning to end took him between 3 1/2 to less than four years to complete his degree. As I mentioned in the other link posted above, it would have taken him 5 1/2 years to complete his degree at the local state university, and it saved him over 10K in additional tuition.

He completed two CLEP and three Dantes exams. Besides the courses he took at the local state university, he completed some online courses at the local community college to complete his degree. I took four CLEP exams myself to get my degree. I liked Excelsior because they accepted around 21 college credits for obtaining my SCLA designation and took a lot of inclass and online at the local community college because tuition was free with the BOG waiver.
