Basic Economics as a business elective for TESC BSBA
#1
Hey guys, just a question of out curiosity, because it may free me up a business elective to complete...

Can an Economic course fulfill the business elective requirement? On the description of business elective's on the TESC website, it doesn't say anything about econ courses, but that seems kind of odd to me so I just wanted to check here on the board.

Economics courses fit into the business degree, but there is the risk that basic economics might duplicate the required micro or macroeconomics courses.

You should be able to see this on your eval, basically ignore the website and look at the eval for more detailed information.

When I run an eval and change the major to BSBA in General Management (since I'm a COM major), it displays this for the nine business electives that are required:
> Complete 9 sh from accounting, banking, business, computer
> applications, computer information systems, finance,
> management, hotel/motel/restaurant management, insurance,
> operations management, public administration, real
> estate, law, marketing, and retailing management,
> fundraising.

Based on that I would say that ECON courses wouldn't work. Even though I'm not doing a BSBA, I do have those nine credits when I run the eval. Mine are DSST exams in Intro to Business, Intro to Supervision, and Human Resource Management. Maybe that gives you an idea of something to fill in the gap. Otherwise, when all else fails you can always call and ask an adviser.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

It doesn't hurt to ask. Money and Banking is transcribed as an economics course, but it's included in the finance area of study on the BSBA in General Management plan. Therefore, a course could be transcribed as ECO, but still be considered a banking, finance, or general business course. I could be wrong, but it doesn't take much effort to email. I recommend email over calling because you tend to get clueless advisors when calling.

For sure. Thanks for the help all.

I'm actually waiting until the very last minute to pay my enrollment fee, so up until this point they haven't really been willing to answer my questions. Is there a specific department that might be a bit more flexible in answering a question like this?

Since Intro Macro and Intro Micro are already required as part of the business core, I don't see how a course titled Basic Economics could be anything but duplication.
#7
I thought it might be duplication, but TESC has it in the PLA database as a separate course. Still, TESC could say there's too much overlap.

Was it in the PLA database for liberal arts credit, e.g., as a general elective or for BALS credit? That sounds more likely to me.

I don't know. It's ECO-100 while macro and micro are ECO-111 and ECO-112, respectively.

Quote:Basic Economics (ECO-100) 3.00 s.h.*
A survey of basic economics concepts that will enable students better to understand, analyze, and discuss current economic events and problems. Concepts include demand, supply and prices, measures of gross domestic product, the circular flow of income, market structures, government fiscal policy, monetary policy and the national banking system, and international trade.

So I finally got an answer from an advisor and while I am getting credit for this course, it's not considered a business course.
