I just submitted the final essay for what is essentially Freshman Comp at BYU-Independent. I have been in this course since May, but that is mainly to taking a several week break from my studies. The textbooks were pretty light for this couse as one would expect with a writing class, but they were very informative. There were a couple of readings in one that dealt with social media from a religious perspective but this was the exception and not the rule. Though this is a Mormon college there is no attempt to proselytize through this course. I imagine this is the same with most religious colleges, but I throw it out there just in case anyone is concerned.
There were 5 writing assignments for the class with the largest being 8-10 pages double spaced. In words per page, it works about to about 2500 words. The rest are fairly light at several pages each. I have listed the 5 writing assignments below for anyone who is interested.
Opinion Editorial
Rhetorical Analysis
Issues Paper
Multimodal Proposal (images, tables, lists etc)
Final Essay (reflective memo)
The turn around time on grading was excellent, but this isn't a course you can expect to complete in a matter of weeks. There is quite a bit of information to digest and each of the writing assignments requires a rough draft and final draft submission.
If I had it to do over again, I would definitely take this class. With the writing involved in other courses, the information I gained will be extremely helpful.
