BYU Flats
#1
I was reading under the FAQ that BYU will give out college credit to BYU students. Does this mean I can apply to become a student, then take this test for 12 credits?

https://flats.byu.edu/faq.php

This is interesting because it is a multiple choice exam for foreign languages for $50.

If I were to take a BYU Indeoendant Study course, would that assign me a student ID? If yes, then the FLATS could be added to a BYU transcript?

Haha, when I first read the title, I was thinking of real estate and thought they were selling residential condos near a campus or something. Until I read the thread, I was just assuming just that...

I can see how the title can make you think of that. I'm going to take a 1 credit course and see if I can get the FLATS exam on a BYU transcript.

You could always just ask someone at BYU.

I left them a voice mail with my question. I know some on the board have taken the distance courses at BYU so I figured I'd make a post. I'll update once/if I hear from them back.

I was now told that the FAQ is a bit confusing, as it eludes to the fact you can turn it into college credit. They said even current students can only receive credit if they take a on campus foreign language class first...

But if you take an on-campus class, wouldn't you already have credit? Anyway, I'm guessing this is a path for returning missionaries to get credit for foreign language skills they might gain during their two years abroad.

I'm just confused with the FAQ, because it makes it sound like you can get credit for the FLATS exam.

It looks like you can launder the FLATS credits through SLCC which is $40 a credit.

Experiential Language Credit Options | SLCC

There are cheaper options, I'll post as I find more results.
