BSEE Math Requirements
#1
Hello,

I am new to this forum and would like to know if anyone got their BSEE degree (or is in progress) from any of the big 3 online colleges?

I am considering enrolling to either TESC or Excelsior, but need to know what the math requirements are.

The math courses I completed were College Math, Tech Math 1 and Tech Math 2. Tech Mach (not Calculus) was their AAS degree requirement. Calculus was included in these courses, but not to the extent of Calc 1 and 2.

Will my math courses suffice the math requirements at TSCE or Excelsior, or do I have to take Calculus 1 and 2?

So far, I have 64 credits from a Community College in Electrical Engineering (no degree) and 14 credits of Computer Science courses from a State College.

Also, will either TESC or Excelsior accept transfer credits dating back to 1973?

Thanks.

Hi MisterBill,

None of the big 3 have Electrical Engineering programs exactly; TESC and Excelsior have Electrical Engineering Technology degrees and COSC has an Engineering Studies concentration that you can load up with electrical classes. TESC does require Calculus, but I'm not sure about the others.

Are you looking for PE licensure? If so, you may want to contact your state board and see your best course of action. Depending on your state, you may be required to have a degree accredited by ABET, of which the big 3 are not accredited. Some states will waive the ABET degree requirement with a certain amount of experience (my state of Maryland waives the ABET requirement at 8 years experience for a non-ABET degree, and 12 years experience for no degree).

Lastly, if you are looking for PE licensure, you should look up what is on the FE (EIT) exam and also on the PE exam. Both exams have plenty of calculus, so even if you don't take calculus for your degree; you will need to know it well to pass the exam. If you register on the NCEES website you can download a PDF with what is on the exams.

Good luck!

Hi jaer57,

I contacted TESC about this and they said that Cacl 1 and Calc 2 are required for a BSAST in Electronic Engineering Technology. They also said they will need to evaluate my transcripts to determine whether my Tech Math w/Calculus courses would suffice as equivalents.

Basically I need to get a BS degree in either Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or related Technology. A BSEE would be my first choice, but since I have limited time and money, I may choose to go with a BS in Technical Studies because most of my credits would directly apply and Calculus is not required.

Also, Charter Oak offers a BS in Technology Studies and it looks like they are very flexible in the area of concentration for this degree.

Anyway, I sent TESC my $150 application fee, I'll just have to wait and see. If they don't accept my Tech Math, I may just go with Charter Oak and go for the BS in Technology Studies.

According to this, Excelsior is ABET accredited in Electronics Engineering Technology.

I forgot about this post. I didn't know Excelsior's BSEET was ABET accredited at the time. I stand corrected! Smile
