BALS - Humanities - Course suggestions
#1
Hi Everyone, I have BALS - Social Sciences and BSBA-GM in my evaluation. Today I tried the what if tool and checked out BALS Humanities concentration and noticed that would utilize my current credits in a better way. Please see the attached evaluation and help me in course selection (easy, fast - cost not an issue at this point) for the rest of the AOS area. Looks like I only need one UL course in section 3 Humanities area and some 200+ level courses in section 4 Liberal studies general courses area. Please ignore the planned TESU courses because most likely I will pay the waiver instead. I am also willing to change some planned in Sophia courses. Just fyi, I am currently doing American Gov through IC. Planning to register for ENC102 through Olivet to learn it properly since I failed the DSST Adv Eng Composition by scoring 386. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, if you don't care whether you get a SS or HUM concentration, then you should just skip that. It's not important in most cases. That will free you up to take whatever you want.

It's also good to know what TESU considers SS vs. Humanities. It's all based on the prefix.
HUM - Philosophy/Ethics, English/Lit, History, Foreign languages, Art, Music, Religion, Communications,
SOCSCI - CJ, Psych, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, PoliSci

TESU will also take Math, Natural science, and many CompSci courses in the BALS AoS.

Thank you Dfrecore. I was thinking that having a concentration in something would be better than no concentration. Also, Humanities looks very close with just one UL course and a few 200 level courses possibly from SDC or other providers.

I honestly don't think a "generic" concentration for a more "generic" degree matters.  Not talking bad about a BALS, but it's just not specific, and I really don't think a concentration matters for most people most of the time (if it did matter, a concentration on a BALS is not as good as a "real" major anyway).

Here's the thing with concentrations, it depends on what your future goals are, if you're going for the BALS/BSBA GM combo and that's the final goal - Then you might just leave it without a concentration and get it done quickly. However, if your goal is to say get an MBA or Masters, depending on which Masters you're looking into, you might want to take courses towards preparing you for that goal.

An example, say you want to get a Walden MS in CJ or Psych, then doing the BALS with a SS concentration will give you a tad more knowledge in that area if you take some UL CJ/Psych courses. I will also say the BSBA GM will suffice for getting entry into the Walden MBA. Basically, it's up to you, it's personal preference on which way you want to get things done...

Thank you for the info. My initial goal was a BSBA-GM but it was taking me a long time to get it done. Then I thought to obtain a BALS which will be faster and closer (although not thrilled about the new LIB Capstone). After graduating I have one year to go back for BSBA if I wanted to. No interest for an MS or MBA.  Any undergraduate is adequate for me because I am only doing this for personal satisfaction and not related to promotions or other career goals (Old and close to retirement). I was just wondering what courses would be easiest to complete the AOS for a BALS - Humanities. I got some ideas from dfrecore’s response but wondering if anyone has specific course recommendations.

You can take CJ or Psych courses without a concentration.  You can take them if you have a concentration in Humanities.  Nothing stops people from taking courses they want.

Thank you Rachel. I will look into the 3 CR Conflict Resolution. I think I did Visual Communications already which came in as ETH 230 Ethics in a digital age.

Thank you Dfrecore. So, if I do just one more UL in Humanities area, I can fill the rest of the LS General course work (section 4) with pretty much any courses, keeping in mind only 6 credits can be in 100 level. That’s very good then. I should be able to find some general courses.

That's right, so if you want a concentration, take the courses you require of the concentration, otherwise any liberal arts courses will fit in the BALS. Again, nothing is stopping you from taking courses you want be it CJ, Psych or whatever that interests you. A concentration might not be for everyone, if it suits your needs go for it, otherwise skip. As easy as that...
