BA Computer Science TESU
#1
I'm looking to get into computer science (just for the degree mainly) and then switching over into some cyber security certifications. My goal is to get a job quickly as an intern/apprentice and start getting paid experience. I have the funds to take the cut and make it work over the next few years. I was also thinking about getting the cyber security degree itself but I read it's basically junk and will not get you the type of experience you need to get hired fast. So I'm avoiding it.

My plan is to do all the credits for this degree with saylor, study, and straighterline (but also confused if I can or not?) and then do the remaining 4-6 credit capstone with the university.

I am wondering if anyone has done the Computer Science degree with TESU? I'm hoping to find the exact courses without contacting admissions, or without talking to a counselor and start working on it today.

The core classes are clear and I have no problems seeing what I need but I am a little unsure of the G.ed credits/courses I need after looking at the requirements online.

https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...ts_Roadmap

It doesn't show how many G.ED credits are needed per subject or how many credits each course is...

I also read that TESU only wants RA credits.... is that true?
It seems like saylor, study and straighterline are not RA providers based on the wiki.

Hoping someone can shoot me over some info on this.

Much thanks in advance  Angel

All classes on the wiki are 3 credits unless stated otherwise. 3 is the standard for most university-level classes.

The gen eds are a little more confusingly laid out than the core classes because of TESU's requirements. TESU limits students to 90 alternate credits per degree. Alternate providers are ones that are not college or university-based. Study.com is not a college or a university. Their credits are ACE-recommended and are, thus, alternate credits.

This means that you need an additional 30 credits from RA sources. 6 of those come from the capstone & cornerstone. It's recommended to do a 16-credit term with TESU to avoid the residency waiver fee, but this is not required. You are allowed to bring in the 24 RA credits from any RA source that suits you: TECEPs, UExcels, ONU, TEL, ASU, etc.

The reason why it doesn't give exact credit requirements for each section on the gen ed roadmap is because different degrees have slightly different requirements. You can see the exact number of credits required for Comp Sci here: https://tesu.smartcatalogiq.com/Current/...er-Science

Please note that the course numbers listed on the TESU are only recommendations based on the courses that they actually offer themselves. For instance, under Scientific Knowledge, you need 6 credits of ANY sciences. You don't have to take Earth Science and Nutrition. Environmental Science and Human Biology at Sophia will fill this requirement just fine. Or you could do one science at TEL and one science from Sophia. It's up to you.

Fantastic and thorough answer. It's all clear in my head now.

Thank you so much for responding, Rachel!

Sorry, I do have one more question.

I know to get into some of the WGU IT programs you just need the compTIA A+ cert to knock off say 4 or 5 courses.

If I got the A+ (or any other cert for that matter) would it knock off any of the core courses in the TESU program? I'm wondering if it might save me some time and effort, plus money since A+ by Mike Myers is offered for free on LinkedIn learning.

Look at CLEPS too.

I'm doing a different degree to you at TESU, but have it packed with 48 credits from CLEPS (free from Modern States).

Also, after a lot of learning from Rachel and many others here on this forum, these are the rules I stick to for my degree.

(Somethings can change, these things do not):

120 credits needed for a degree at TESU.
90 credits max can transfer in from non-college partners (AP, ACE, CLEP, Sophia, Study).
24/30 remaining must be from RA (TESU, UExcel or another accredited college).
6 credits for the Cornerstone and Capstone MUST be done at TESU.
16 credits must be from TESU to avoid Residency Waiver.
15 credits from Upper-Level courses are required (1 being capstone).
Most people can complete 15 credits per term reasonably.

Adds/corrections:
90cr from CC's max
RA is not just "accredited" since that word includes NA schools - they must be RA (Regionally Accredited) schools.
18cr of UL for any degree except the BSBA, which only requires 15cr of UL

Most people don't take 15cr per term, as TESU is not a semester-based term of ~16 weeks - instead, it's 12 weeks, which is more like a quarter-based term, and people generally take 3-4 courses per term at quarter schools; at TESU, 15cr would be 5 courses, which would be considered a fairly heavy load.

15/16 credits would be a fairly heavy load, but there are some "tricks" out there that make it particularly attractive/easy for comp sci students to do this. For as light a load as possible, I recommend:
  • SOS-110 - Cornerstone. Most of which can be completed during the first week.
  • PLA-100 - The 1-credit class needed to bring the total up to 16 credits. Can be completed in under a day.
  • CIS-107 ePack - Single exam that requires little to no studying.
  • LIB-495 - Capstone will take up the bulk of your time.
  • CIS-351 - Allows student to avoid Network Technology TECEP and other UL pitfalls; can be completed in under 30 hours.
  • ART-100 or other LL course of your choice.
Students will polish off PLA-100 and most of SOS-110 during the first week. During the second week, take CIS-107 exam and finish off CIS-351. This leaves the small portion of SOS-110 to complete + ART-100 (or whatever) + the capstone to concentrate on. The 2.5-3 classes should be completely reasonable/doable. If necessary, pay for an extension on the capstone; just make sure that you meet the requirements. You're still spending less than you would pay for the residency waiver.

Keep in mind that TESU will not allow you to take the capstone until you have 100cr, and most of your Core/AoS courses completed.  This would mean that you should have your entire degree completed except these 16cr worth of courses.

If you're still pursuing this degree, you should be aware of changes to TESU as of January 1st. If you complete Operating Systems, Discrete Math, or Computer Architecture AFTER December 31st, 2021, these classes will not be accepted.

This may have been mentioned before But This may be an option for some looking for a computer science degree. Unless I’m missing something It appears you could knock out half the degree through alt credit, clep, ect. That would knock out 60 credits.  The other 60 would be core. Florida residents $229 credit. $345 for non resident.
Maybe not so terrible since tesu now requires 30 Ra anyway.

Oh yea. And no calculus !!
