BA Comm or BSBA Marketing - which one is quicker @ TESU?
#1
I've applied and been accepted at TESU because I heard they have the cheapest/fastest degree programs and most liberal credit transfer policy. TESU is currently reviewing my (88) credits (listed below) that I've completed from three separate regionally accredited schools. (I have an Associates of General Studies and have attempted my BA in the past.)

What's your opinion of the quickest Bachelor's degree to get with the credits I'm transferring? I've selected a BA Communications. However, I read on another forum that a BSBA in Marketing or OP Management might be quicker/easier due to no capstone requirement? What does a capstone require? I consider an easy degree without anymore math requirements, as I've already taken statistics. I'm looking to test out of as many classes and perhaps a PLA portfolio from years of real world work. Thank you for any advice or opinions.

"Easiest" is different for everyone - what might be easy for me might not be easy to you, and vice-versa.

Even though I'm getting my degree from TESU, I don't think they have the most liberal credit transfer policy at all. I think COSC or EC might be more liberal with what they accept. That being said, TESU requires fewer UL credits than COSC/EC (18cr vs. 30cr for most degree programs - and only 12cr UL required for the TESU BSBA).

The TESU BSBA requires College Algebra as well as stats, so you would at least have to do that. Also, the BSBA does require a capstone - but you have the option to take it as a TECEP exam rather than a course, unlike the rest of the degree programs.

The main problem you're probably going to have with the TESU BSBA is that I think a lot of the courses you've taken won't transfer well into it. The FVT, GAT, CIS, MM, and XD courses probably won't count as Gen Ed, and there is only space for 6cr of free electives in the BSBA degree. So those courses will all get bumped out.

On the other hand, if you were to apply for the BA in Comm, after you get your eval, you can look at how your credits would fit into other degree programs (like the BA in Liberal Studies, which is by far the most flexible of TESU's degrees). And with the BA in Comm or BALS, there are 27cr of Free Electives, so anything that wouldn't fit into your degree would most likely go to Free Electives, so fewer of your credits would go to waste.

I would also look at the BSPS (BS in Professional Studies). There is a little more leeway in what is considered the Area of Study. It's a good way of getting some business or other courses to count in the AOS without having to get the full BSBA if you want.

Interesting. I always thought that TESU had the most liberal transfer credit policy, but never really looked into COSC or EC.

BLUE courses - general electives
Not-BLUE courses- free electives

My advice is not to earn any more credit until you've had an evaluation.

Once you've had an evaluation, you can use the tool in your TESU account to play with "what if" options.

Your list is approximately 50% transfer courses, and 50% non-transfer. The transfer courses will count no matter what degree you choose- that's not the issue.

The non transfer courses WILL transfer, but only as free electives to the 2 degrees you are considering (see exception below), so if you choose a degree that doesn't have slots for free electives, (or only has a small amount) those courses won't get used.

At TESU, it doesn't matter that you completed an associate degree elsewhere, they pull all of the credit out and re-place it into their distribution.

Communication: 27 free elective openings Thomas Edison State University: Communications *note, you already exceed 27 free electives

Marketing: 6 free elective openings BSBA in Marketing Degree Program *you really REALLY exceed 6 free electives

An idea- if you tried their art degree, it's possible that some of your free electives would actually be bumped into degree categories, meaning you might get to use all of your credit. This degree also only uses 27 free electives, but some of your classes would NOT be classified as free electives. I think it's worth getting an evaluation and then checking all 3 before you decide. Thank you for your comment. So, are you saying that even with 88 legit credits, I still may not be able to apply all of them to the Communications Degree? If so, TESU is definitely not as liberal as I thought. Also bummed to learn that they don't accept FEMA courses, as I've completed 6 additional credits through them as well.

This isn't going to be specific to TESU, it's going to be that way for every college. You have to complete credits that plug the holes. In other words, let's say you had 200 credits in automotive. They are totally "legit" credits from an accredited college. Those credits are not English. They are not math. They are not psychology. They are not literature..... if you don't meet the requirements of the degree, you can't earn the degree. In your case, you have more non-general education courses than the 2 degrees you are considering allow. It's not a TESU thing, it's your transcript.

You can earn any degree at TESU, the question is how attached you're going to be to the courses you've already completed. If you really really really want them all to "count" it's probably going to require the Art degree. Whether or not that's important to you is a personal choice. I understand your frustration, I went into TESU with an associate degree where ZERO credits counted- I started from scratch. For me, it was waste a zillion hours and dollars plugging a square peg in a round hole, or just finding the degree I wanted and going forward. I went from scratch to AA & BA in only 18 months, but it's up to you to decide.

The CIS (Understanding the Physical and Natural World) and Acting (Humanities) courses should transfer as General Ed electives, shouldn't they?
UL means Upper Level.
Did your associate degree come from a community college or a 4-year institution?
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

Yes Kay V you are right it will and should come in under humanities and natural science. Her credits in Adobe will and can come in under Art. Foundation of Design, Computer Paint, Drawing and Media can come in under Art. But I do not think they will come in under upper level. Those can also count as humanities if need be. But if the degree seeker want a Communication degree I would definantely make sure these course go toward that. Just ask for a revaluation on it after they come in.
