Definitely check drawing first. I tried tinkering with polymer clay sculpting a few years ago and found my wife was more talented than I specifically because she had studied drawing when she was younger. I had trouble seeing shapes and planes the way she did.
BTW being a tech guy you may be interested in picking up a Wacom Bamboo tablet for around $50 or so, and there's lots of software at varying price levels. I played with Art Rage and the interface is stunningly elegant. Autodesk Sketchbook Pro has historically had 4-5 star reviews on average and costs about $50. Never tried it though.

I have done some 3d modeling too. Its very cool to create something in 3d. Its actually really hard too because you don't just draw one static view of an object, you have to be able to build it in 3 dimensions and then on top of that, make its appendages move. Thats the part that I haven't done quite yet. The 3d objects I created were more like stills, lifeless props.

Being an Interior Designer and a past student of Design we actually had to make physical 3-D models. Free standing models. Not so simple to create.
It was alot of work and you actually had to show ingenuity in your design. My instructor was a complete design dictator. But under that sort of mentoring
as painful as it was, you actually challenge yourself more than you ever imagined and actually walk away learning more than you ever imagined you would/could learn.

I do not HAVE horses, but I ride quite often. I actually volunteer at a barn once a week too. Yes it is a Friesian! My favorite breed!
The 3D modeling is something I have been fascinated with since I was very little. Right after watching an animated show I would go to the bonus features and watch the artists design the characters and then make them come alive! That was my favorite part! I've tried downloading free 3D software trials, but I don't have the time to figure them out. AND being trial versions you can't save your work. Looks like I'll have to wait till I can take the classes.

I have a Friesian/Andulsian gelding. He is a BIG BIG boy. He is rocking in at over 16.5h, rocking a shoe size 4. Yes my guy Jem is considered a light to med draft weighing approx 1200lb. He is a complete force of nature. Big and powerful. I am just greatful he likes me alot.
Try Google Sketch-up. They have a free download. You can do 3-D design of buildings with Sketch-up.

Thanks, I already have the trial version of blender but I never had the time to figure it out. I actually have had more success with facegen because it was easy to figure out, but it is very limited on what it can do. I have also tried Wings 3D, iclone, and Google SketchUp8. i clone was the only one i had time to tinker with.
