Anyone familiar with Chadron State College?
#1
Just curious if anyone is or has been involved with this school

I have applied for the MBA program and it looks like I would be able to start in October. This looks like a great option. They are regionally accredited and total tuiton for the MBA program is under $8,000.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Website is Chadron State College - Home Page

Thanks

Hi,
I have never heard of this college but their program looks interesting.

I am still finishing the "pesky" undergrad degree so I'm not all that familiar with the "whole MBA process" but I was wondering: do TESC et al require you to take the GMAT? like Chadron does?

And also, what are the Common Professional Component equivalencies (CPC) in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Management, Marketing, Quantitative Techniques, and Computer Literacy that Chadron requires? Is that customary for a MBA program? Just wondering.

Also, their undergrad classes look really good too. Their tuition is $157/credit hour and they have a decent selection of online courses to choice from.

Nice find, BMills.

I can't take credit for finding this school...GEEZER recommended it to me. So far, the school has been great and it looks like they are going to allow me to register for October classes even though my undergrad degree from EC will not be conferred until November and I will not have taken the GMAT yet.

To answer a few of your questions:

do TESC et al require you to take the GMAT? like Chadron does?

Not all schools require the GMAT, I know the NA schools do not...not sure about TESC. It is pretty much just a formality though. They require a minimum score of 400 or for me the minimum will be a 240 because they take your GPA and multiple it by 200 and then combine that with your GMAT score and if you are over 900 then you are in.

My GPA will be a 3.3 x 200 = 660. 900-660=240 required on GMAT

The score for spelling your name correctly on the GMAT is a 200 with a max of 800, so this should be a breeze, but it is $250...FYI - the average nationwide score on the GMAT is in the 500's...

And also, what are the Common Professional Component equivalencies (CPC) in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Management, Marketing, Quantitative Techniques, and Computer Literacy that Chadron requires? Is that customary for an MBA program? Just wondering.

The CPCs are the undergrad classes that they require for admittance. I think there is some wiggle room on this as well because they mention "professional experience" as a possible equivalence for these requirements. But, if you are getting a business degree, you should have either taken these CLEP/DSST exams or taken these classes. If your undergrad is in something other than Business than you still may be able to get in though.

The tuition and accreditation is what drew me to this school. With ACBSP and regional accreditation, no one can ever question your MBA and that is a BIG deal for me. Tuition has just gone up to $210/graduate credit hour, but that is still only $7560 for an MBA that can be completed in a year if you push hard. I have not found a regionally accredited, ACBSP program that comes anywhere close to that price. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Let me know if you have any other questions. I have been chatting back and forth with the dean of the graduate school at Chadron...small school...

I'm no authority on this subject--but I did poke around a little before deciding that if I were to get a master's degree--someone else would have to pay for it. If you are truly looking for bulletproof, you may want to consider AACSB accreditation, which appears to be the gold standard for business degrees. Check Wikipedia for the list of AACSB accredited schools. If it were unattainable, then it wouldn't matter, but on another forum I've seen some talk about Jacksonville State University, which is RA AND AACSB. It appears that the MBA is a 36 hr. program. Here's the info I found:

Jacksonville State University JSU Online : Jacksonville State University Distance Learning offers the MBA General and the MBA Accounting via DL. At $225/hr., the 30-54 hr. MBA General costs $6,750-$12,150 and the 36-60 hr. MBA Accounting costs $8,100-$13,500. They are accredited by the Southern Association and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Great info Michael - I agree with you on getting someone to pay for the MBA. Fortunately my work will pay up to 5K per year, so I am going to use it while I have it...

I did check into JSU - the fees have gone up to $300/credit hour...but the AACSB is very nice. I did not think that there was an AACSB school for this cheap. I'm still not sure if it is worth the extra $90/credit hour from Chadron and the program looks a little less user friendly, longer courses, etc., but I am looking into it.

Well...believe it or not it looks like you talked me into JSU. The plus is that the General MBA program is only 30 credits, not 36 like Chadron State. The AACSB accreditation is awesome and because of how the program will be spaced out, all tuition will be covered by my company. Plus, they are going to let me begin the program in the fall even though I will not graduate from EC until November. At $300/credit hour the entire program comes out to $9000 plus books of course. It looks like I am going to have to make the drive down to Alabama for the oral final interview given by the faculty, but the head of the program said that they are looking into an option to do the final interview through a teleconference.

As long as you have the business prerequisites, JSU is a great option. The prerequisites are the core business stuff that you have to take to get a BS-Business at Excelsior and I'm sure TESC like Marketing, Economics, Finance, Accounting...etc.

Thanks for the info Michael - you da man

Cool! Glad I could help. If it works out for you, maybe I'll get ambitious too. You never know...although one of the things I learned about myself in pursuing a business degree is that I enjoy the psych stuff a whole lot more!

I have been accepted to both California Coast and American Public University/American Military University for their HR graduate programs. However, Chadron has an organizational development graduate program that I have a strong interest in. I have to sit for the PHR exam and I do not want to take either the GRE or GMAT. (I can't take the math!) I like that Chadron is a state college, RA, and the cost is a wonderful factor as well. I am also toying with Indiana State University as they have a great rep and don't require GRE. Their cost is slightly above APU/AMU.

So thanks for bringing up the topic of Chadron!

I'm working on my Bachelors with an Elementary Education endorsement and an endorsement in Library Media. I'm doing it with MidPlains Community College (local comm. coll) and Chadron. Chadron comes highly recommended around here, but since I'm in West Central Nebraska and Chadron is in the Northwest, it's a given. Also, the entire program, except for my student teaching can be done online. At $162/credit, one cannot complain!
