I am now preparing for this exam and if the Peterson tests are any indication, I think the CLEP is expecting us to recognize 'conventional' interpretations typical of what you learn at the freshman level. If you took the class there might be room for subjective viewpoint, or not. The movie Dead Poet's Society with Robin Williams has a great dramatization of this.
Going too deep caught me on some of the Peterson questions where I chose the answer that suits the entire piece, not the line referred to in the question.
