Jennifer.. you have some good advice. I am bullet" reader, a magazine reader, wikipedia skimmer, etc.. you nailed it on the head with me.
I have realized this is not my strength and I'm ok with that, just sorry I wasted $100. Lesson learned and it's time to shake it off as I have two more exams next week.
These two I can actually prepare for in a method I'm accustom to.

I am now preparing for this exam and if the Peterson tests are any indication, I think the CLEP is expecting us to recognize 'conventional' interpretations typical of what you learn at the freshman level. If you took the class there might be room for subjective viewpoint, or not. The movie Dead Poet's Society with Robin Williams has a great dramatization of this.
Going too deep caught me on some of the Peterson questions where I chose the answer that suits the entire piece, not the line referred to in the question.

I took this CLEP also and failed with a 47 the first time. I waiting 6 months and took it again and passed the second time. I would recommend the REA study guide and practice tests. I just kept taking the practice tests until I could answer every question correctly. The test is definitely tough but passable.

Today is my first day in InstantCert and I specifically joined today, to get a sample test for Analyzing & Interpretation of Literature because I too was told it was the easiest and mainly just "common sense." Now I am scared!
My question is that I didn't see Analyzing & Interpretation of Literature listed on this website. Of course, I may just not know where to look yet, as this site is brand new to me!
I am 47 years old and started Mount Olive in January to get my BS. I have never taken a Clep/Daunte, etc. before, so if anyone has any insight or suggestions for a real NEWBY, I am all ears!

I haven't taken this CLEP but I do know that there are no flashcards for A&I Lit. However, the exam feedback is very helpful and be sure to know your literary terms and keep track of time.
Also you can use free Peterson's Practice tests found here.
click on "Testing and Education Reference Center" on the left side - I hope it works, it's been making problems lately.

I found this test to be incredibly easy. BUT I have been reading voraciously since I was very small. My library grieved when I moved away because I was their second most active customer. I think the people who find this test easily doable are the ones who love to read for pleasure. And who have a natural aptitude for it.
I could not pass a math test to save my life and did so poorly on my accuplacer that my community college made me take 2 high school math classes before thinking about taking a math. AND I went to tutoring every single week for help with my homework. Guess what? I still haven't taken a math CLEP because I have forgotten everything I learned in those math classes. I look at the problem, and I know I've seen it before, but for the life of me I can't think how to go about solving it.
Don't be scared away from this test because of this thread, and to the OP, don't be afraid to retake it. A 44 is pretty close to passing, you didn't miss by much! I would go over the Petersen's and really study the correct answers until you "get" why the correct answer is correct. There may also be some kind of book out there like Poetry for Dummies, and I have read How to Read Literature Like A Professor. It was long ago, before I found CLEPs so I am not sure if it is a definite help as a resource, but it can't hurt.

It's just one of those things. Kudos for putting forward your situation as not enough people do that. I'm not a maths person and really struggle through but I love reading so I feel it's probably harder for someone who's an abstract structures super-iq to try and get to grips with the minor technicalities and major community associated with the humanities.

Like Lyanne, I love to read. (Did one of your elementary school teachers tell you that you read to much? That happened to me.) Unfortunately, I'm not very analytical. I excel in superficiality. (Is there such a word?) Fortunately for me, this test doesn't require you to be too analytical. There's a passage, and you have 5 options on what the passage means. When I say I'm not analyitcal, I'm not belittling my abilities. I'm being honest. With 5 options, even I could figure out which one was right. Don't be afraid. I wonder if the biggest hurdle for folks isn't timing. You may want to practice a bit on how you'll test. Will you read the passage first quickly, look at the questions, and go back and read? Will you read the questions first, then read the passage, then answer the questions? That sort of thing. Best of luck.

I must be one of those people who just "got it" when I took this test. There is no secret to it, the questions seemed straightforward and the answers seemed to just jump out at me. I am a skimmer as well when it comes to reading, but when I took this test, I read the passages to myself silently. It goes against everything I normally do, but it seemed to help me understand the questions better. Also, go with your instinct on the answers, most of them seem too simple to be correct but that seemed to be the point when answering the questions.
