I've been doing some research and I was looking over the Penn Foster website and looked at their Associates in Business Management degree. I was looking over the tuition and now I'm confused. I broke it down below. Please help me see if I'm missing something. Thanks.
Total Price for 1 semester is $1,245.00 - $260.00 if paid in full = $985.00/semester
My mom called Penn Foster and they told her that they will accept a max of 50% of your degree in CLEP tests AFTER they evaluate it.
So if I was getting an Associates which is 60 credits and say they only accepted 20 that leaves me with 40 more. If I get 12 credits a semester that's 4 semesters @ $985.00 = $3940.00.
Now if I go with TESC and CLEP out of as much as I can, then the TESC degree would cost me $3,318.00. But if I go with TESC I'll have $2,000 in CLEP fees. If I go with Penn Foster I'll have about $1,000.
So here is the breakdown:
PENN FOSTER -
$985/semester x 4 semesters = $3940.00
CLEP tests = $1000.00 (estimate 10 CLEPs)
TOTAL = $4940.00
TESC -
Tuition costs = $3138.00
CLEP tests = $2,000.00 (estimate 20 CLEPs)
TOTAL = $5138.00
Really?? That close in price!! What am I missing? Does Penn Foster charge per credit hour?

First, I would go with one of the Big 3, because Penn Foster is not regionally accredited.
Second, there is a more cost efficient way to get your degree from TESC.
Let's go over costs
CLEP- $77 per exam- plus proctoring fees
Straighterline- $39 per course, $99 per month- there is a promotion going on where you can get two courses for the price of one. So two courses will cost you $138 (99+ $39).
TECEP- $99- plus proctoring fees
ALEKS- $19.99 monthly- you can get up to 12 mathematics credits from them.
TESC- Enrollment fee- $2971- It will cost you the same for a Associate and a Bachelors degree. Go for the Bachelor's degree. Why waste money? If you can, try to complete a BA from TESC.
Total Cost: $4061- Not including fees charged for administration of CLEP test, that depends on where you test. (It seems like this will cost less then a non-regionally accredited degree from Penn Foster)
CLEP: $462- (6 x $77) Fees to College Board, not including any proctoring fees.
Straighterline: ($138)- Two Accounting courses
ALEKS- ($19.99)- Two Math Courses
FEMA- Free
TECEP- ($198)- $99 per exam
TESC- $3243- Enrollment Fees, Graduation Fee
Requirements for Associate in Business Administration:
I. General Education Requirements 30
A. English Composition 6
CLEP English Composition
B. Humanities 6
CLEP Analyzing American Lit- It looks like you already completed that
C. Social Sciences 9
CLEP Micro
CLEP- Western Civilizations- it seems like you completed this already
D. Natural Sciences and Mathematics 6
ALEKS- Statistics
ALEKS- College Algebra
E. General Education Electives 3
It seems like the CLEP exam (Biology), you've already taken will fulfill this.
II. Management Core 18 A. Principles of Financial Accounting 3
Straighterline- Accounting I
B. Principles of Managerial Accounting 3
Straighterline- Accounting II
C. Legal Environment for Business 3
CLEP Business Law I
D. Principles of Management 3
CLEP Principles of Management
E. Principles of Marketing 3
CLEP Principles of Marketing
F. Introduction to Computers 3
CLEP Information Systems
III. Business Electives 6
TECEP Exams (Pick two from Business Category)
IV. Free Electives 6
FEMA Credits- free

You are missing that Penn Foster isn't regionally accredited. Since you are starting from scratch, there isn't a single reason under the sun to get a non-regionally accredited degree, especially since you are a young person about to start a career. Good luck to you!
P.S. some people use CLASSES at Penn Foster because the classes are ACE evaluated (accepted by many regionally accredited schools) but don't get that mixed up with completing a DEGREE with them, their DEGREES are not regionally accredited. There are situations where getting a non-RA degree is fine, but this isn't one of them.

Thanks for taking the time to break that all down for me! You're right. TESC would be cheaper and several other people have convinced me against non-RA colleges. I just need to clarify a couple of things:
* I would need another Social Sciences CLEP because the Western Civ is only 3 credits and Micro is 3 so I need one more 3 credit test.
* I was planning on using 3 credits from my biology (since it is 6) in the free electives section.
* From what I've read on TESC website, I would have to take Pre-Calculus. So in my case it would be better to CLEP that because ALEKS doesn't offer it and Straigtherline is more expensive then my CLEP fee.
Does that seem right? Thanks!

Do not settle for less than RA. I hate to offend any NA grads but its just not the same thing. RA schools will transfer credits back and forth with no problem. RA masters programs require an RA undergrad. RA teaching jobs require an RA degree. Even more specifically, some RA schools will only accept business credits from AACSB accredited business programs.

Right about RA only. Although many people on the forum choose PF as sources of credit to complete degrees from the big three. I know this has nothing to do with the OP's question, but the big three will accept ACE courses from Penn Foster which we all know by now. (Which the Business management program all the courses are ACE approved). Obviously never settle with a Penn Foster associate's degree since it's NA, especially in this job market in my opinion. But TESC will take all my Penn Foster credit and some as upper level as well which is a blessing. Although, I did sign up with Penn Foster when it was a little bit cheaper...they raised tuition like crazy. At the end of the day, half of my TESC degree will be Penn Foster credit, but I will still consider myself a TESC graduate

Exelsior is right. I took a couple of classes at Penn Foster that were Ace approved and they were great. Use them only for ACE approved credit for transfer to a RA school.
Sorry Penn Foster but if you want my vote, go get RA accreditation.
