Aleks questions
#1
Hello

I am looking at doing some Clep and DSST testing and will be complementing it with Straighterline and Aleks courses. The exact path I will be taking is still up in the air as I am still learning and am investigating a few options still. While I am doing this I decided to start studying up on a few of the tests that I know I will need, and to work a little on my math with Aleks.

I am taking Business Statistics and have found Aleks to be very enjoyable for the most part. I am at the point where my pie is showing at about 61% under the Assessment performance goal. 8% of that is shaded blue from my initial assessment(I know I suck at math), and 53% is progress made under learning mode. In my reading about Aleks it has stated that periodically I will be given assessments that may make my overall progress fluctuate. I have yet to see one. I do have the "Things you need to review" just about every day, but that is it.

This may seem like a silly question, but for me to get ACE credit in this course do I just continue along the way I am until I hit the 70% mark, or do I need to go into my master account and request a final assessment and this is what I will be graded on? I don't want to hit 70% in learning mode, then move on only to find out two months later that the learning mode progress doesn't count.....so figured I should verify on here.

The other question is that once I hit the official 70% mark, can I apply for ACE transcription without having decided on a university yet? I'm a little paranoid about moving on to another Aleks math course without having my prior course work recognized. If so, does ACE charge for this transcript request to hold it on their file, and if so, how much? I don't mind paying a fee, I was just curious about that last part.

I would like to say that this forum has been an amazing resource for me so far. I have signed up for IC and have found it to be very helpful. The last couple of weeks has been very enlightening, and I am hopeful that I will be able to complete my education with the tools that folks like yourself have been providing me.

Thanks for any input you can give.

Yes, it will need to be "locked in" by an assessment. Learning mode progress doesn't count. I don't know why they haven't given you one yet. I do know that I never went back and did the "things you need to review." If you still aren't hitting any assessment you can do the "final review" thingy on the master account. However, it's not a final review. You can take it as many times as you wish.

No, you don't need a university for ACE. They'll store it for free. When you are ready, just submit it. I can't quite remember the process, but if you hit any problems, just ask. Once you've submitted it typically takes them a day or two to register it in their system. When it says it has been approved, then you know you can safely move on to the next subject.

Best of luck.

Be careful.....I was at 68% and chugging along. Days and days went by, I did an assessment and now I'm at 41%!! lol AAAHHH, I hate math and ALEKS is tedious!!!!

I log in every single day and it still makes me do a brief review before I can start. Unless I'm missing something that would allow me to bypass the review and begin on new material right away.

You can request an assessment under the master account though idk why you haven't had one automatically... I went ahead at 69% and requested an assessment and got a 72% so you never know what could happen! Pushing that "see what Aleks has found out about you" button is just about as scary as pushing the view scores button on a CLEP. Big Grin Just make sure you save the explanations and always check you answers and it should hopefully move forward. Good luck!

Thanks very much for the responses, exactly the information I needed.

Make sure that you take each explanation and print it to a pdf and save it in a folder for exam time.
When you take the exam you will have 50 pdfs of every single type of problem you have encountered. The exam will take a lot of time but since you have the pdfs you will know how to do each problem.
Good luck.

I knocked out stats, bus stats and college algebra. It was a joy and I really learned a lot.

Hey this is all great advice! But I want you to know that yes, the transcript from ACE will cost you($40) once want to send it to the university of your choice. You do not have to have the university chosen yet. Oh and your grade won't be on the transcript you receive from ACE. Just make sure you have 70% or more. I love ALEKS and I was so glad I used it. How is the Business Statistics? Is it hard? Does anyone know if it counts for UL at TESC? I thought I read somewhere on here that it does. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask! Big Grin

Firedup,

Business Statistics has been fairly enjoyable so far. I have not touched a math course in about 18 years and have not found it too difficult. There are a lot of different equations to deal with and that has been my biggest challenge so far. Ryoder's suggestion to take pdf copies of each explanation is probably exactly what I need to help with that. I find it fairly easy to get the concept in the now, but then two days later on the review I'll be darned if I can remember the exact formula for solving it. I am guessing that for anyone with a little more post secondary math the course would be very routine.

I am sorry but I don't know if it counts as upper or lower level credit.

Thank you so much for your info! I have been a little nervous about taking any of the other ALEKS courses but maybe I will give it a try. I had the same problem with not remembering! Once I got to the assessments I would go blank. I just had to work on it with every spare minute I had so I would get to the assessments quicker! LOL

I took Bus. Statistics in college and the professor recommended copying the formulas to index cards (which he let us use for tests). It was faster than looking thru a book for the formula or memorizing them (Yuck!). I still have the cards 20 yrs later!
