Aleks assesment question
#1
I'm aware there is an initial assessment for the intro to stats and if you get below 70% you have to work on an entire McGraw hill book compiled into a "learning pie". banghead

My question is can i keep requesting an assessment from my mastery account and keep taking the assessment until i hit 70% and just bypass the pie all together?

You didn't work on any of the pie? Ho many times did you take the assessment?

I wonder if this might work for my son. He HATES statistics, doesn't need any other math or stats courses, and he is dreading taking it at SL or Study - but when he tried ALEKS, he bombed the assessment and then proceeded to plod through the pie for 6 weeks or so before throwing his hands up and quitting. I may need to encourage him to sign up again and see if he can just repeat the assessment until he hits 70%.
Here Researching for my son, who has done the following:
Community College: Intro to Philosophy, Fundamentals of IT, English Comp 1
Saylor: Intro to Business, Principles of  Marketing, Corporate Communication
Shmoop: US History 2 (WGU won't accept this)
ALEKS: Int. Algebra, College Algebra
Study.com: Personal Finance, Principles of Finance, HR Management, Global Business, Advanced Operations Management
Straighterline: US History 2, Environmental Science, US History, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, English Comp 2, Principles of Management, Business Law, Business Ethics, Psychology, Organizational Behavior, Accounting 1,Communication, Managerial Accounting, Statistics
Ed4Credit: Managing Information Systems
Sophia: Project Management
WGU: Bachelors in HR Management

Second son is currently attending Penn Foster for his high school diploma, then on to Ashworth for An Associates in Criminal Justice

I think ALEKS might be the hardest stats course, so the general consensus on this forum is to do it another way if ALEKS isn't working for you. SL, Sophia, Saylor, Study.com, DSST, etc.

Just as a reference: my friend's daughter is a Marine Biology major, and a straight-A student at a 4-yr state school, is a tutor in the chem lab, took Calc I & II, and she took Stats there during the fall semester and got an A. I had her take ALEKS Intro to Stats assessment over Christmas break, and she took 2 hours to complete it, and said there was stuff on there she'd never even seen before, and it was like a completely different course entirely. She got a 30%.

So ALEKS may be a great deal, but it might not be a great Stats course.

I just wanted to add my gripes about ALEKS statistics...

I read some of the posts about how hard ALEKS statistics is, but I figured they must be exaggerating. I've always been pretty good at math, so I thought this wouldn't be too hard. I was wrong! It really is impossible. Alek's explanations are usually impossible to follow (for me), even though some of the explanations are good, a lot of them are like - to give a baking analogy - you take flour, and some sugar and some eggs - and here is a three layer cream cake with chocolate icing and decorations! At least that's how it feels like to me. And aleks doesn't let you go further in your pie until you solve that example.

I'm at 68% now, and I'm not even sure that I will even finish, (sigh), I spent so much time on this, but what gets me the most upset is that I don't even feel like I actually learned anything. As I said, I do like math, and I liked college algebra and precalculus, but this is a course basically on how to use aleks calculator, and I know that I will never ever use this information ever again, plus, I think I really did want to learn statistics.

I had the option of doing this course at a local CC for minimal $, but I thought this would save me some time. Unfortunately, I think I clocked in over 30 hours, and I may not even finish because I am so frustrated, so this was a real waste of time for me.

Sorry, just had to vent!

I see Penn Foster's Statistics course is ACE recommended - I wonder if that might be one of the easier options? I just said the word "ALEKS" to my 17 year old and he looked like he would vomit, so I'm not going to push him to try it again.
