Are most people here just doing the liberal studies degrees at UMPI? I originally chose a liberal studies with history minor. But my advisor pointed out that I could just do a regular history degree if I took 2 foreign language classes instead of 1. I've been warned off of taking any language courses at UMPI through this forum and it looks like maybe Sophia is the best option. But I'm intimidated by trying to do Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 when I'm barely eke-ing my way through Spanish 1. I feel like it will take me an eternity for just that one class. Has anyone taken language courses anywhere else? And has anyone taken Sophia Spanish 1 and 2 without any Spanish background? Thank you!

French 1 is also available on Sophia, so you could check if that works too?

It's up to you to decide if a major or a minor would work for you and if you would like to take an extra language or not... Switching from Spanish to French won't really work as you need two language classes and I think it needs to be in the same language. Review your goals and see if it aligns with what you need or want.

It would be safe to say that many, if not most, people here who took Spanish through Sophia had no previous foreign language experience. It is the easiest (relative) option available to cover the level I & II. Remember it is about getting through it with a passing grade 70% (it has no GPA impact at all).

Thank you Allvia, that is a good point. I have been focusing so much on getting full marks on my UMPI stuff that I forgot Sophia is just a pass or fail.

Its stupid easy like the rest of Sophia. I got a 98 and 97% with no Spanish knowledge. I don't even register these classes as roadblocks to anything...

The history degree requires 6 credits in the same language.

For the history major you can take two Spanish classes or two French classes? It appears that both were in the degree requirements ?

It's 6 credits of the same language. Doesn't matter which language. Doesn't have to be Spanish or French either. Those are what are available in YP. You can transfer in the language requirements.

If you're familiar with another language, do the ACTFL for more credits and they'll be added to your electives, less work to do with just one exam...
