WGU lets you complete classes on your own pace and their tuition is a flat fee per term regardless of how many classes you complete. The downside: they award competency units instead of credit units, you have to complete a rather lengthy application process and testing to be accepted, even for a few classes. The way the courses work is you take an intial pre-test and if you pass the pre-test you are supposed to be able to proceed to the final exam...if the mentor approves it. Some courses have projects and papers that must be completed to get credit and others are just the pre-test and final exam. If you can move fast enough, with a cooperative mentor, you could save a lot of money. The mentors are grad students or upper class students or employees, not necessarily academic advisors or program heads, so they may or may not be experienced in the field of study to really be able to assess your knowledge level and abilities. It might be an option for you, just make sure your school will accept their competency units in transfer before you leap. Due to changes in DOE and regional accreditation requirements for online learning schools are being discouraged from doing open entry/open exit online classes.
