Hum 103 is no longer an option for 2d and I'm positive ART 108 Intro to Graphic Design is going to be a huge hit to the people trying to keep a fast pace through the program. I started the fall Sumer session last week and quickly got through BUS 415, Bus 321, and BUS 260 but ART 108 is bringing everything to a screeching halt.
I thought this would be a cakewalk considering I have over 25 years of experience in the graphic arts field. This class is ridiculous and really has me questioning the program. It's not like any other CBE class that I've taken and I'm shocked by the amount of work for a 100's level intro class.
There a 4 milestones each with a project and a paper outlining design principles and theories and how you applied them to your project. Then, each milestone must be modified and used for the final which is creating your own brand and corresponding website in which you'll include your milestones as a portfolio.
One milestone is a 25 slide presentation made from scratch (no templates) with a paper that you will have to do TWICE!
It' crazy when the whole final for my previous UL class was a 20 slide presentation and that's less than half of the work for one milestone for an intro class.
Since when was graphic design Physical art history, Social media marketing, and website development?
No mention of graphic design in print media or the programs that graphic designers actual use (Illustrator, inDesign, photoshop, sketch) in the course. Not sure how you can call it Graphic Design.

some advice from someone with no prior graphic design experience (I've dabbled in svg making for my cricut just for fun or a little bit of lightroom but definitely not a professional). I took this class Summer I and made an A. It really is an easy class, it says so in the milestones to use Canvas or Vector or whatever other program you are comfortable with so long as the final product is saved in the correct format, .svg .pdf .ppt etc. The first milestone was cakewalk as all you had to do is pick a template from canvas and a time period and throw some facts and pics on your template and save as svg. The "paper" is really just a 1 pager which you use to describe why you picked this particular template. The professor will give you feedback and that feedback you will use to correct your milestone because for the final you will upload your corrected milestone and re-write your statement to include the feedback your received and how you incorporated that feedback. He says it often that he's not concerned about the content only the presentation so for the powerpoint I took almost word for word from the website for my topic and my template was the simplest thing ever (do not over complicate it!) I essentially used power point and used shapes to create my template, I used consistently all the same shapes and color schemes with word art, was it time consuming yes but not overwhelming. Same thing with my statement at the milestone explain why i used this particular topic, why these particular colors, this font etc. he gave me feedback and I corrected his suggestions and added it to my statement. The campaign project is super simple too, he wants you to create a template using vector, I used Illustrator because that's what I'm comfortable with I kept the same theme across all 3 of the campaigns and just changed the words for each, added my statement and took his feedback and corrected. The final milestone was simple too I also used Illustrator because that's what I was comfortable with to achieve the look I wanted. The final wasn't too bad, I was originally overwhelmed thinking about how am I going to build this website and what do they use now? last time I built a website we were still using HTML and the beginnings of Java. I was so disappointed when I found out that there's templates already in google that he wants you to use to make your own "branding" Watch the video that's included in the final and it will walk you through how to add each page (1 page per milestone), you'll also upload your statement with your corrected product. The last part is your biography it's all about you and your style. I highly highly suggest to submit things early specifically your draft final because it takes him a while to grade, one time I had to email him letting him know that although I understand that there was a holiday in the time period that I had submitted my draft ultimately I am still waiting for some feedback for my submission 7 days prior and I'd hate to not have enough time to work on his feedback and get it resubmitted. He did take a long time to grade my final even though I only had 3 things to address from his feedback and he didn't upload grades until a day after the cut off so you can imagine I was panicking. I would say don't wait until the last minute. DM if you want to ask something specific, I hope this helps. Good luck!

Admittedly, I was feeling a little overwhelmed last night but that’s not all from the class. You’re correct that it’s not all that difficult, I’m just a little shocked at the amount of work and the content is not at all what I was expecting.

Don't overthink it. Being a graphic designer, you're thinking like a pro not as a 100 level student using Canva. It's quite common and something that happens at many schools is that the LL courses often times have more work than the UL courses. Once UMPI moves to Brightspace, I don't think the courses will be as easy or have as little work. Just a gut feeling I have.

Wow, that's some write up and a well explained post... There's really too much info to cover in an intro course, so the ART 108 should be a very simple, straight forward introduction to Art/Design. It shouldn't be using all the major software packages, but will give you a glimpse of what can be done by using the 'basic' approach to art/design to get your feet wet and mind on the subject matter.

I dropped this course. I will revisit it at the end of all my other requirements I too was frustrated by the amount of work being asked for milestones in this Level 100 class primarily because milestones do not count towards our grades. I didn't want this to slow me down, so I will tackle my remaining UL requirements and then finish off my two remaining GE courses. Good luck!!

I am enrolled in Summer Session 2 and I took HUM103 to satisfy this requirement?
I am worried now... Did someone at UMPI tell you HUM103 will not satisfy this GEC 2D requirement? This is my first session at UMPI and I enrolled in HUM103 to complete this requirement...

You can technically take it for this last summer session but it has to be requested. It's not available after this session because of the move.

I requested the competency to be added, they obliged, and I completed it with 100%. Does that mean it satisfies my 2D requirement? I hope I did not just take this course to take it.
