ACT Advancement Courses for Teachers
#11
NAP Wrote:Hi Jennifer!

Would you mind starting a new thread (so we don't hijack this one) and let us help you with ideas to finish your Natural Science degree?

What credits do you have and what do you still need?

If allowed, I highly recommend DSST MIS. If I can pass it with no previous experience in the topic so can you!

I have noticed that this course has been popular for this degree - ENS-314 Global Environmental Change: Thomas Edison State College: Secondary Category Landing Page

I'd love to get this degree, too, but it's not going to work out for me right now. I'd love to help you get it finished!

LOL I have no plan and ideas! (I also have no money, but that's all together irrelevant!) Environmental Change and the capstone are possibles but yawn....Besides, I'm not excited at paying rack rate for anything let alone 9 TESC credits that will likely be not much more than busy work and a bunch of money. That's $2100 in tuition only, not counting enrollment fees, graduation fees, and text books. No thanks.

As you know, you can use prior credit minus the new "post-graduation" requirement. Since my BA degree, I've earned 21 new undergrad level science credits and 4 grad science credits (plus others that won't count)- none are in a degree. Through shifting and bumping, I can use all of them if I bump OUT some of my old 100 level gen eds electives since I can't use them all in-major since they likely exceed one of the gazillion rules of combinations and permutations. That, of course, leaves holes in the major. So, currently I need 9 UL non bio sciences. My plan? I dunno. ACT? Nothing? Take up gardening?

In my case, I'm looking for cheap upper level sciences- that's been my brick wall for finishing the 9 credits I need for the BA Natural Science degree. I've capped out on biology, am afraid of math and physics, and get a twitch in my eye every time I think of what constitutes "upper level" in chemistry. So, I've just kinda pushed it to the back burner- one day, maybe when I'm really really old, I'm going to finish my Harvard degree- and for that, I'll take more bio, but I hate to take more bio when I know I can't back fill in that pesky 92% complete BA. It's possible (I still think) to use the ACT science courses for a FRACTION of what I pay for a Harvard science class. (grad courses are currently $2000 but guaranteed to come in as upper level since I'm not in a Harvard degree program!) And let's be frank, ACTs look pretty easy....I could be wrong.

The Habitable Planet, Physics for the 21st Century, and Rediscovering Biology: Molecular to Global Perspectives have the NSCI prefix. I'm assuming it means natural science.

So you do understand some of the reasons why I hate capstones. LOL.

I know you thought I disagreed with you, not true. Smile I'm just looking at the change as a whole, not specifically how it would change my plans personally. I'll do whatever crap they throw at me.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge of COSC accepting these courses?

The EBUS701 Accounting or Number Crunching Internet Resource Business 3, 3 and EBUS707 What's a Business Ethic? Internet Resource Business 3, 3 appear they could be duplicates of LL Acctg 1&2 and Bus Ethics. Anyone know?

What does "Worksheets Only" mean? Does it mean there's no classroom time and you complete the worksheets and sit for the final exam? Of course, maybe if I go to the website and read it, I'll find out. But why not ask. This is too much fun not to keep the conversation flowing. Besides, I'm still laughing at Sanantone's comments about the TESC advisor.

Their courses are funky- when it says "traditional" that's not butt in seat, it means correspondence. <shrug> When it says "travel" that means you have to GO somewhere for a field trip/etc. I saw an art class that required you to visit a museum in Chicago to see a specific painting. (photo proof or on your honor?) But, unless it's a workshop offered in person or has a travel icon, these are ALL distance learning- even traditional. I have no clue what 'worksheets only' means. Remember these are kinda "new" and especially new to this forum. This company existed before, but was reincarnated into what it is now only a year and a half ago- so these guys are babies. I would bet that any or all marketing has went 100% into the k-12 market, so the fact that the info landed here is kinda cool. (who first broke this? Was it Irish?) Anyway, I'm sure someone from this group will be the first to break it into each of the big 3. I'll also predict that whatever one does, they all will do, because they will accept anything that's not an accreditation violation. So....whose first?

Thank you Jennifer! I'm hoping COSC will jump out in front and lead the pack. But they seem to never be first. TESC seems to be the more innovative of the 3.

what about you? Are you enrolling/enrolled at COSC? If so, maybe you could ask them if you would be allowed to take one and transfer it in?

.....Off topic again

Jennifer,

Since you like Biology, how close are you to a Biology degree at the Big 3?

Also, EC just started offering a Natural Science degree. I can help you with some of the details on that, if you need it.

Back to the topic.......
AS in 2010 and BS in 2013 at Excelsior College - Transcripts and Costs
MS Biostatistics in 2019 at Texas A&M University - Graduate School

Sharing Credit-by-Exam*
Resources Used - 20+ Exams Passed & General GRE
Practice Tests - Available for CLEP and DSST

Let's not get carried away, no one said anything about LIKING biology..... I will go check it out though Smile Thanks!
But, I'm not able to earn a bio degree at TESC, they require more math and physics than I'm up for. (which is to say that they require math and physics) The natural science degree is more my speed. I'm aiming for a second masters in biology, which ties in beautifully to the nutrition degree I'm working on. But, I don't want to go backwards (because I'm OCD) and unless I could complete the science degree this summer, I'm skipping it. Once I have my master's I think I'll ignore my dangling undergrad credits that are waiting to be used.

EDIT: clearly I can't write a decent sentence tonight. I just mean that I want to work on the TESC Natural Science degree this summer if I can, and finish before my first masters because it feels like the right thing to do. If I end up finishing my master's first, then I'll be fine skipping the BA from TESC and will instead put my energy into getting a second masters through Harvard. I need to quit typing lol.
