This is a WAG (wild-a$$ guess, as opposed to a SWAG, scientifig WAG), but I suspect it is a degree that is pursued by people who are already in the field, but who need a degree to advance. In other words, a police officer, or fire fighter wants to advance, needs a degree, and gets this one. That said, it's only a guess, and I do not think any education is ever wasted. What do you folks think?

Thats awesome. Yea I figured since TESC gives the AAS Enviro a dime a dozen, there probably isnt much out there. Obviously the BA is the better way to go. But... a degree is a degree.
sanantone Wrote:I have had no luck with getting any safety-related jobs or even interviews with this degree. Honestly, the courses I took didn't even prepare me for any safety-related jobs (criminal justice and a few FEMAs). My experience is in security and I have no OSHA training. From the job openings I've seen in San Antonio, safety jobs want experience and/or a bachelor's degree in a science or safety-related field. Now, my social science degree has landed me several interviews, even for jobs requiring a criminal justice degree. I even qualify to register as a licensed chemical dependency counselor intern in Texas. My degree waives the 270-hour substance abuse education and 300-hour practicum requirements. Two years of supervised experience and passage of the exams will make me a full chemical dependency counselor.

My wife and I are members of our local EMA CERT team. During training I mentioned to our instructor (now the county EMA director) that we were looking at taking the FEMA classes. He was very interested in hearing that. But they don't have any job openings right now, so...

The FEMA courses are only used as free electives in all of the degree programs except for two. They can be used in the area of study for the AAS in ESST and the area of study electives in the BS in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

It's been six months, you may want to contact the school and ask if there is an updated list.
Here is the link to SandraNCs TESC Equivalencies lists, you will probably find the information useful. http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...post117772

That's a very old link you've found. If you are looking for FEMA courses for TESC, this is the current list as of 6/14/13 (noting that every few months the school has updated the list slightly (see the right column of courses not accepted and their end dates):
http://www.tesc.edu/degree-completion/do...review.pdf
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.
