What a great find. And there's more! Check out this report on alternative methods to achieve a college degree http://www.lowestcostcolleges.com/. Download the free 67 page report and read it. It's fascinating--particularly if you are already familiar with much of the information. I found a video-promo for this when I looked at April's CLEP videos.

The man who wrote the report is Dr. Gary North--apparently most well-known for predicting global chaos on 01/01/2000. Look him up on Wikipedia. He appears to be a bit of a nut, but I only know what I read there. In any event, he wrote a pretty comprehensive and sometimes accurate report. Be warned--it's VERY dated (he states that Excelsior does not teach any courses...) but provides an interesting snapshot of all the different methods available to acquire a degree--including an alleged "illegal immigrant" wholesale tuition price available in certain states (maybe this belongs on that other thread--hope those guys don't read this!) which legal citizens can also "qualify" for but have to know to ask.

One thing I found particularly interesting is that it takes him a while to get to Excelsior College--he hits Edison first and appears to have a preference for their program--at least as it stood whenever he wrote this (3-5 years ago maybe?). He's mildly critical of Excelsior although he ends his paper with a testimonial from an Excelsior grad and on page 60 indicates that HE would choose Excelsior if he were going the examination route. I think the grad may be related to the CollegePlus! program, although they're more TESC.

I don't know anything about the guy other than what I've seen today, but if you have an interest in alternative methods of achieving a college degree--you should definitely read this--and then verify through other sources. Thanks for the links, April!

I wanted to second an endorsement for Dr. North's pdf. It is SO IMPORTANT that I printed out 10 copies and gave them to moms in my homeschool group. There are 2 versions- one geared at high school kids and one geared at graduates. There is overlap, but you'll find enough differences that I suggest checking them both out. Super valuable information, and I think anyone considering one of the "big 3" would benefit from reading it as well. As mentioned, some of the info has changed since the document was written, but it is better for giving you a great "BIG PICTURE" when thinking about your undergrad degree- where to get it- how to get it- and where most people get off track. Thumbs WAY up.

I was thinking the same thing...very few people seem to know about CLEP anymore and absolutely no one knows about DANTE. I am amazed at how poorly CLEP and DSST advertise themselves. I know that it is not a high profit business, but if people were properly educated on exam credit potential our education system would change dramatically...
