I'm not someone jumping for joy over this. i actually think it's kind of disappointing. I really liked that edX was owned by colleges/universities. Now it will just become a profit center for another tech company.

While I think edx continued to fail to deliver on some of their aspirations(like the micro bachelor program) I did like the idea of a edX being owned/run by mit/Harvard as a non profit.

Coursera is for-profit and still allows the schools to have autonomy in designing their courses. 2U makes canned courses, so I hope they don't plan to give edX member schools canned courses.

One thing that set edX apart from Coursera was that it was owned by MIT/Harvard. There are certificate programs on edX that allow you to transfer into graduate programs at several hard to get into schools like MIT and RIT. I was looking at the PM cert from RIT on edX because if I get a B in the cert then I can get into the pm grad program at RIT. Now with this sale I will wait awhile and see what happens. I'm not ready to jump in that's for sure.

One that really has my head spinning is that the $800 million is tax free and part of it will launch MIT's new online platform which again is a non-profit so no taxes once again. $800 million to Harvard and MIT....tax free.....Both have endowments in the multiple billions.

Being non-profit is not at all the same thing as not accumulating resources to take on big projects.
