My guess is that advanced degrees aren't associated with social mobility because advanced degrees are more often earned by people who are upper middle class and upper class.

That was my guess too.  If you're already upper middle class, there's not that far you can go, whereas someone who is poor/lower middle class can attain far more percentage-wise with a 4-yr degree.  More bang for your buck.
