part time course
#1
Asking for a friend who is considering applying to go part time to avoid paying parent plus loan. How many courses would one take per semester to be considered part time?

1 course per term would make a student part time. So that would be 2 classes per semester. They would be expensive courses though at $1500 each.

If considering part time, you would want to consider doing courses that are not CBE due to the cost structure.

Undergraduate is 6 credits for PT (aka Half-Time). However, your friend would have to be actually enrolled and taking the courses from a recognized college/university (not the alternative credit sources we talk about here) - which is just adding another expense. At some point they will have to pay on the parent plus loan (and it is just going to keep adding interest). If they are legitimately having a difficult financial time they should speak to the agency that is handling the loan and see what options they have - as there are often many (https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/ty...lus/parent).

And that $1500 in tuition is only for an 8 week term. Hopefully, their payments are far less!

@Peraings41, why aren't they applying for Fin Aid? You need to provide a bigger overall scenario by providing more details. For example, what degree are they going for? Is it the Your Pace program or something online at UMPI that's not offered on the Your Pace, or is it a butt-in-seat option? It may be best for them to fill in the addendum and template as that provides an overview of everything in order to assist the prospective student better, if they can get Fin Aid, the entire UMPI degree is paid for! https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Area-works

@bjcheung77 - I am pretty certain they are not going for a degree (specifically), they are trying to put off having to make student loan payments for a loan they took out for their child's education (Parent Plus).
