Rise in Tech Apprenticeships
#1
Information
So I've been noticing a rise in tech apprenticeship opportunities which I think is being driven by market forces since there doesn't seem to be enough qualified individuals entering some tech fields. Of course, not every tech job requires a 4 year degree so some employers and training programs have decided to start training people for the specific skills they need for the job, rather than expecting candidates to show up, already possessing the necessary credentials. Here are just a handful of opportunities I've come across:

https://centers.purdue.edu/pcap/

https://woz-u.com/enterprise/apprenticeship/

https://www.comptia.org/content/lp/appre...s-for-tech

https://www.amazon.jobs/en/landing_pages/apprentices

https://apprenticareers.org/

https://www.ibm.com/us-en/employment/new...ticeships/

Most official apprenticeships, come with paid on-the-job training and additional classroom-based training which may include industry certifications or college credits. There are even a growing number of apprenticeships offering ACE credits:

https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...0d3a33232a

https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...0d3a378463

https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...0d3a378463

https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...0d3a378463

https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...0d3a378463

Just thought I'd bring these opportunities up for anyone who may be looking for less conventional options or who wants to accelerate their entry into a tech field by getting paid to be trained for a new job. Other trades have been using apprenticeships for decades so it will be interesting to see tech fields expand in this direction.

I meant to link this one in the original post, but couldn't remember the name until now:

https://www.franklinapprenticeships.com/

It appears a bunch of these are sponsored by IBM. Also, it looks like some of them have a "pre-apprenticeship" that you can potentially do for free to help you gain some knowledge/skills for a real apprenticeship.

This is my deliberation about getting a degree. I apprenticed as a software engineer at a startup and have since worked for the past five years as a software engineer, but I don't have a degree (not even a non-CS degree, no degree at all). I've been considering just continuing to build my portfolio and personal branding instead of, or maybe alongside of, getting a degree. But really I just need to stop deliberating.
