Good morning, everyone!

So, after a discussion with our wonderful modmin team, I have taken it upon myself to create a primer for anyone who might be interested in attending TOCC. Before I dive in, I just want to make a couple of points:

1. TOCC is extremely old school. I'm talking paper and and pen/snail mail old school. Everything is done in house, including transcripts, and they only mail hard copies of officials. TOCC is the pride of a Native tribe that has the third largest reservation (by size) in the United States, but a tribal population of less than 20k. The staff is warm, helpful, and sincere in their desire to help students, but it's a small operation. Bear this in mind when working with them. Phone calls get you further than emails.

2. The culture, traditions, and standards in a tribal college environment are a little different. There is a greater focus on the collective, and collaborative learning is an honored tradition. A little respect, and mindfulness, go a long way. I'm providing this as a guide for others who might be interested in joining the TOCC community. Please be polite, respectful, and do not overwhelm them.

Now, to the good stuff:

I found TOCC during the COVID shutdown era. In fact, I managed to stumble across them when they were offering tuition for free. Most tribes were extremely proactive during COVID, and went online sooner (and stayed longer) than most institutions. However, online learning had been a small part of their offering until that point, so it took a lot of coordination and effort to move everything online en masse. They did a wonderful job! A lot of their courses remain online, but they are often scheduled with meeting times via Zoom, if I remember correctly. There are some asynchronous offerings. Unless you're doing a studio practicum, its easy to find their courses online.

I have two degrees from TOCC: An AA in Liberal Arts and an AA in Social Work. I earned both of these in two semesters, as I transferred in a boatload of credits. I have linked my transcript HERE, which redirects to my website and shows all of my degree work. In short, I waked in needing only 15 credits to finish the AALA. The degree plan for the AALA can be found HERE. The 15 credits, however, is a little bit of a misnomer, as everyone is require to take both the three-credit HIS 122 Tohono O’odham History and Culture course and a full four-credit Tohono O’odham Language course (THO 101 or THO 106). Funny point, all full-time employees are required to take those courses as well! The language course is the biggie here. Since everyone has to take it, and two-credit courses are not common, everyone usually ends up with 16 credits, and not 15. Keep in mind, though, that it's the same number of classes (5).

As far as the language course itself is concerned, be ready for a bit of a challenge, especially as a non-Native speaker. I've taken two Native language courses, and they are a fair challenge even for linguists. While the TOL borrows a little from Spanish, it, like most Native languages, does not have a real root in Germanic, Slavic, or Romance languages. Therefore, most were translated phonetically, and there's a bit of a disconnect. The good news is that the staff teaching TOL is EXTREMELY understanding of the difficulty of the language, especially for non-Native speakers. THO 101 was my only B at TOCC, but they helped me earn it, and they'll help you too.

In regards to HIS 122: this is where your mindfulness will come into play. Let me start by saying that everyone at TOCC is extremely understanding of the cultural disconnect between the O'odham people and the outside world. They're not there to shame or ridicule you, and this isn't a non-Native guilt thing. Yet, just like every culture, religion, and nationality in the world, there are some unique aspects of culture that can be easy to stumble over. For example, there was an assignment discussing landmarks, and I was assigned a particular mountain to discuss. However, the tribe fell silent during a certain part of the year when discussing the mountain. When the time came for me to present in class, I followed custom and fell silent. Our professor was grateful that I honored custom, and I simply emailed my presentation to him and received full credit. And while I should point out that nobody would have been angry at me, and I would have not been penalized, a little respect and understanding went a long way. Side note: if you get to take this course with Dwayne Pierce, do so! He is incredible.

The rest of my AALA courses were standard, boilerplate offerings you would find anywhere else. That's not to say that the quality of the courses was bad. Like most institutions, TOCC employs adjuncts to teach a large portion of their catalog, and I'm sure a lot of the courses offered at TOCC are the same courses you'd find at many Arizona community colleges. Just stay on top of your work and you'll be fine.

Some key points to remember:

1. You're paying $36 per credit hour for regionally-accredited college credits. There's not a better deal anywhere. You're also gonna get much more 1 on 1 interaction with faculty than you would at, say, a UofPeople.

2. 45 credits can be transferred in, HOWEVER, only 30 of those can come from CLEP, AP, testing out, etc. That being said, With the 7 free credits at Pima, the 3 at Jax State, and the 1 at Clackamas, it shouldn't be too hard to find a cheap pathway. Worst case scenario, you pay less than $200 for 5 extra credits.

3. I'll leave it to someone else to do the Sophia research. I've been pestering them for transcripts lately, and I don't want to be an annoyance. This may be a pathway. I'm not sure.

4. I have linked my graduation application HERE. It breaks down what I took, and how my transfer credits worked. The registrar is open to conversations to help your transfer credit fit into your degree. Don't be afraid to ask.

I'm sure I've left some stuff out, but, if you pay for the entire degree out of pocket, with no transfers, its $2196 plus some small fees. If you transfer in the max credits, its $540 for a regionally-accredited degree that has a transfer agreement with every public 4-year college in Arizona (including ASU, which could make for some fascinatingly cheap 4-year options).

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask!

Hi All,

I was just on Sophia Learning's website and have found that Central New Mexico Community College seems to have recently partnered up with Sophia Learning and StraighterLine. Current students at the Community College and I believe anyone who plans to apply and attend can transfer in certain classes from either place for credit.

I did not look into this deeply, but I see that they don't accept every class from Sophia Learning and StraighterLine. It's mostly general education or pre-requisite courses for your degrees. Either way, I think this might be a great option for New Mexico Residents or anyone who just wants to save money on education in general. This might be great for anyone who wants to study Business Administration because, it seems like the majority of the classes is geared toward that program.
I'm posting a list of links below for anyone who wants to read on this further. Also, contact the admissions office too if you have any question about this.

For the most part, almost all associates degrees are 60 or more credits, and comprises of general education and electives. There are some degrees with an emphasis, focus, minor, etc, it's just a different name for a similar structure of 15-18 credits or so.

With alternative credit, the max most institutions allow for transfer is 75% of the associates degree, which is 45 credits out of the 60. For those using the associates to ladder into a bachelors, you can max out that 75% as well, which is 90 credits out of the 120.

My suggestion nowadays have been to maximize the use of ACE and alternative credit options, up to 90 or even more if you're going for Coursera certs that grant college credit through ACE recommendations. This adds to the trifecta of certs, degree, experience...

Going above the 45 for the associates and getting 90+ will hit all the general education and elective requirements for the bachelors, you'll only be left with the residency requirements for the major, usually 30 credits, unless it's in a very unique major.

When I started several years ago, I went with StraighterLine to get a feel of online education, I took 34+ courses with them over a span of 3 months subscription, I also had to pay for each individual class I wanted which cost between $49-$69 each back then.

You now have better options that are cheaper, easier, faster, here's an example: Study.com recently came out with a new pricing plan, their College Starter which is $95/month, 2 at a time, unlimited classes a month (currently 67 classes to select from).

You can use these classes offered by Study.com towards the 90+ credits, hitting all the general education and electives for a degree from one of our recommended institutions, you'll still need to complete the requirements from those institutions to finish.

TLDR: For your associates, complete more credits to hit future requirements for a bachelors of your choice, affordably using alternative credit such as Study.com, up to 90 credits for use towards recommended institutions within the board.

I'm going into the military in July, but I'm not eligible for any special things yet
I am going to the DLI so if I can at least be eligible for their BA program that would be nice
Budget: $800
Commitments: needs to be 100% completed by July 8th
Dedicated time to study: like 10 hours a week
Timeline: didn't make one, would just like to have it before my high school graduation
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: none

Hello,

I haven't asked this publicly before, but I was hoping for advice.

I am helping an adult learner (co-worker/friend) that is trying to find a path to hold ANY degree, for career advancement.

They work in customer service, and wish to advance into management (but they would require at least 2yr degree)

This adult learner is not "learning disabled" (please, forgive me if this term is no longer acceptable), they had been through a testing program in high school, and were rated as a "remedial" student, but not "disabled".

This was in Canada, courses were "basic" (which was the term for "applied", in the "applied, general, advanced" system used at the time).

Their (my for them) original plan was to just "collect" 59 LL credits, do 1 RA credit (College Success/Career Planning/Basic IT/similar?) and degree out Pierpont's BOG AAS (gen studies, or business admin?) ... but they were no where near "fast enough" to beat BOG policy change.

Seeking alt, TESU... but not ideal

They struggle with course work that is at the level of:

TEEX Cyber101 (they were not successful in passing the 1st course, of the course set)

AWIT (Advancing Women Tech, 2 courses were free .. they were unable to pass either)

and the "See more impact labs" CMS Certificate program (they did pass, but it was a solid, daily, 2 week effort and frustrated them highly)

IMHO, they would not pass Eng Comp Modular via CLEP/Modern States (but I believe they "could" pass environmental science, via CLEP, for example).

I was wondering if it was even possible to get them into any, yes any, TESU associates degree, if they were to "payout the waiver" and only need to do a media literacy course and capstone.

The main question ... how do I best advise them (please advise me)

They have 7 LL credits, they did earn already:

3 math CMS Certificate

1 credit: College Success (Saylor)

3 credit: BUS107: Customer Service (Saylor)

They found the Saylor courses above; "common sense" in their own words, but they have worked (for many years) in customer support.

Past this they have:

WHMIS/OSHA Safety Certificate

MSI SixSigma Greenbelt (oddly), & "Leadership Workshop", Certificates

Redcross First Aid (level C - top available) Certificate

I am trying to come up with a VERY light course load to get them up to 53'ish credits (all LL are fine), but I am stuck... (at about 27 additional "easy" credits)

Any advice?

Hello all,

I am a supervisor at a large law enforcement agency. I am working on developing a program that the department can cover the cost of or at least subsidize, to help police officers achieve their college education. I am very aware of several affordable competency-based bachelors degrees that would ultimately be part of the plan but I am struggling finding some options for an associates degree. I also know the argument that the focus should just be the bachelors degree and forgo the associates degree, but for some people, that associates degree milestone is important in their personal motivations. Pierpont AAS BOG was my target AAS to be introduced into this program until the recent residency requirement change, and paying out-of-state tuition for 12 hours at PP doesn't financially make sense. Local community colleges don't appear to be good options for us either due to a lack of recognition of ACE credits.

I am seeking help in finding an online, RA, associates degree program that accepts maximum ACE/Alternative credits (Sophia, SL, Study.com, Saylor, etc.), with the lowest residency requirement, that doesn't charge incredible out-of-state/out-of-district tuition/fees.

Ultimately, our program for our police officers and civilian staff, would look something like this:

Department pays for Sophia/Study.com/ACE courses to cover most of their basics.

Department pays for Sophia/Study.com/ACE courses to cover most of their associates electives.
Department/Local Foundation pays for remaining credits required for associates degree.
Department pays for Sophia/Study.com/ACE courses to cover remaining eligible electives.
Department/Local Foundation through scholarship, pays for 2-4 semesters of an online CBE bachelors degree.
Employee graduates with degree at no cost to them.

Additionally, a similar model would be created for inmates housed at our county jail. My department houses approximately 1,300 inmates at any given time, and being able to offer cost-effective options and fast options (considering in county jail, they are typically housed there for months not years like a prison), that can be rolled into an associates degree, will help with their rehabilitation and reintroduction into society.

This may seem like an impossible task, but I will take any advice or recommendation you experts have!
