"Excelsior" is the state motto. Excelsior College is well known and respected in NYS.
It would be interesting to chart the growth in EC student body by students' state of residence, though military-based students might confound the data. Perhaps a tie to NY was more self-evident when they chose the name. [Totally tangential sidebar alert] I've been watching classic SNL on DVD recently and marveling at how much of the humor isn't funny unless you know -- or care -- about New York.
