A couple more recent articles regarding the cost of a degree:

College conundrum: Less out-of-state students - U.S. business- msnbc.com ("College conundrum: Less out-of-state students")
My niece is headed off to college, and her final choice was dictated partially on her preferences but mostly on which of her accepting schools could offer the most financial aid. Even then, with plans for a journalism degree, she's going to be heavily in debt for a degree that puts her in a low-paying field.
More public universities need to make their programs more convenient for adult learners. Some offer plenty of opportunities to pursue degrees online, but others are still quite limited in what majors are available. And how widely publicized are these opportunities? I think fewer working adults would turn to the overpriced for-profit schools if they were aware that they could get a BSBA for 1/2 the cost at their state university's online or evening/weekend division. But nope, they see the TV commercials for DeVry and ITT, and think that's their best - or only - option.
