6-8 per session seems to be a reasonable average, though some students have been able to complete 10+ classes in a single session.
Classes that are started but not completed by the deadline will get an F. Students may re-take the failed class during the next session, but the failure will remain on your transcript. Assuming you are able to successfully complete the class during the second session, UMPI will only use the successful grade when calculating GPA. Other grad schools may include the failure when calculating GPA for admissions purposes. Avoid this situation not requesting additional classes during a session if you're unsure about being able to complete them by the deadline.
For continued attendance, UMPI only requires students to complete 2 classes per session. Only doing the bare minimum is not very wallet-friendly, but it's something to keep in mind if it looks like your studies will be interrupted by RL. It's better to complete the minimum successfully than it is to bite off too much and wind up with failed classes.
