UMGS struggles

UMGC's tuition is in line with other non-traditional, state institutions, such as Charter Oak State College. CSU Global has one tuition rate. While CSU Global isn't super competitive for those looking at in-state rates, they're much cheaper than UMGC for those looking out of state.

University of Florida's online programs are dirt cheap for in-state students, and this is a top 30 university. For out-of-state, they're similarly priced to UMGC. If one has the ability to get in, I'd choose UF over UMGC.

Years ago, Chadron State College, Fort Hays State College, and Peru State College were known for having super cheap rates regardless of residency. They're still relatively cheap; Peru and Chadron have one rate that's just under $300 per credit. UMGC's out-of-state state rate is not competitive for the type of school it is.

You're right.  Once upon a time the hot schools were a completely different set of schools.  Even the for-profits held a different niche in the distance learning ecosystem.  Part of this was because they were the first out of the blocks and partly because they offered distance learning degrees not available anywhere else.  A lot has changed over the years.
