I've heard it so many times over the years that it's hard to remember... However I believe I first read about CLEP (and similar programs) due to looking into Excelsior College. The only reason I even looked into Excelsior at the time was because of exactly what you said below, though in my case it was the fact that they took IT Certifications for College Credit. What amazes me is that there are also some graduate programs that will take certifications for college credit. My one MCSE could count for not only many undergrad credits but as much as half of a graduate degree (25% of a degree at http://www.aspen.edu 50% of a degree at http://www.itmasters.com.au)
