As far as I can see, this man was not some poor academic struggling to survive in a some hostile "publish or perish" environment.  He was a "behavioral science superstar" who wanted to continue to be a behavioral science superstar. 
Pure ego.

It would certainly be good to find the fakes.  I'm afraid that it's a problem that will likely take decades to sort out.  I'm not involved in academic research in any way but I'm not sure if anything new or different is being done in research circles to eliminate this problem.
