As far as I can see, this man was not some poor academic struggling to survive in a some hostile "publish or perish" environment.  He was a "behavioral science superstar" who wanted to continue to be a behavioral science superstar. 
Pure ego.

Understood, but I wonder how long he's been lying considering that the article in question is from 2012. Or, it could be that's the only time he lied - don't know. I remember an article a few years ago on chemistry and other science papers using fake data in large numbers. Students are citing these sources, and government, scientific, and health organizations are making decisions based on these papers. 

In regards to that paper, there were four other people involved. Interestingly, this was a replication study and was used to discredit someone else's work. The famous study claiming that half of psychology studies could be replicated comes to mind. Now, you have to worry if replication studies are fabricated, but then again, replication studies can be used to help find the fakes.
