All schools make more money on their classes! So I'm just guessing that they're not widely used, and not worth keeping around - if they were helping their students to progress more quickly towards a degree, they'd keep them.
You're not highly encouraged to take them. You also have to study for them while taking classes so it's not super convenient. You already have quite a bit of work to do every week in your classes.
I would think it would depend on the student - my kid is enrolled at PurdueGlobal, they are only allowing her to take 2 courses the first term even though she has 30cr after 1 year in college, proving that she can be a full-time student, with good grades. So she is going to take Study.com courses as well - she can easily do much more than the PT schedule they have her on. I'm sure that's true for others as well - they are not taking a full course load and could fit in some additional credits, especially with no deadlines and papers to turn in.
