Many traditional universities will award the doctorate to multiple participants in a research effort. Each person's contributions must be singled out, formed into a dissertation, and rise to the level worthy of the award of the degree. My impression is that it is much more likely at large research universities where lots of research is conducted. My impression is also that it is more common in the "hard" sciences when employing quantitative methods.
