I haven't tried it yet, although we plan to. Both my son's school and my daughter's advertise scholarships on their websites. Most are local. So my best (and only) advice is to log onto your local HS (or a bunch of them) and see what they say.
Here are some examples from an email I received today from my daughter's school (yes, I know these ones are for high schoolers, but there are others I've seen that aren't; plus the same organizations may have multiple scholarships, one for HS and one for college kids) :
High School Essay Contest: A $150 to $2,000 scholarship for those in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade is now posted in the library. The San Diego Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution Society, San Diego Chapter will award one student a $150 prize, with the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution offering up to $2,000. The application is open to high school students who are interested in writing a 800-1200 word essay on the topics of the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the U.S. Constitution. The essay must be submitted by December 31.
Burger King McLamore Scholarship- These $1,000 to $50,000 scholarships are intended for any students with a 2.5 GPA or higher that are planning to attend college or a post-secondary vocational/technical school. Students are selected based on their grade point average (GPA), work experience, extracurricular activities, and community service. Applications are due on Dec. 15 or whenever 50,000 applications have been processed.
CAEOP Scholarship- A $1,000 scholarship for graduating seniors is now posted on the bulletin board in the library. The California Association of Education Office Professionals (CAEOP) is awarding scholarships to graduating seniors with financial need intending to pursue a major and career in the fields of business or education. The application is due on Dec. 17 and requires an essay and 3 letters of recommendation.

Scholarship available to a graduating senior preparing to attend an accredited college/university
or trade school. 3.00 GPA, have a relationship with a military veteran
Albert W. and Mildred Hubbard Scholarship applicants should:
• Reside in Escondido, CA or Valley Center, CA at the time of their application
• Be graduating seniors or graduates of a high school in Escondido, CA or Valley Center, CA that have attended such
high school for 4 years, or graduating seniors from a community college in that have lived in Escondido or Valley
Center for the 4-year period prior to graduation
• Plan to enroll full-time (12 units minimum) at an accredited two-year junior or community college in California, or an
accredited four-year college or university in California, in all cases pursuing a bachelor’s degree
• Have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
• Have a demonstrated financial need
• Be United States citizens or permanent legal residents
