When you have to deal with serious subject matters daily, then you'll see people with a real dark sense of humor developed as a coping mechanism. That forum is talking about dandelions and walks in the park in comparison. I just don't find them funny.
Maybe the worst job in the world: Dead Kids & Dark Sense Of Humor! Wow....The other forum is all over the place with humor and takes but with this as your benchmark, I can totally see why you would receive humor/takes differently than those not having daily experiences as you.
Reading through your share on the other forum, it was interesting that the defense of the tone over there had a lot of members taking honor in the negative tone. The mention it being a rite of passage, earned through PhD labor and other poorly weighted positions. However, perhaps we all change after completion of a PhD? Is the process so taxing that it steals you of your joy for life? I might want to rethink this next project of mine
If I become like them after completing my PhD, then just run me over. I'm already snippier after dealing with the senility and constant personal attacks, which are often done out of grumpiness and arrogance rather than in a joking manner. Being just as mean is the only way you can deal with them. If you're a nice person, then they will run all over you.
That forum also leans heavily male, and it's for a reason. Not that I mind being around a lot of men; it's just that the men I'm around in real life tend to have better social skills.
Many of the worst offenders don't even have a PhD. John Bear is friendly. Steve Foerster is rational and is almost finished with his doctorate.
