Most of the people protesting at Trump rallies and even events for the Democratic Party are Bernie Sanders supporters. I was disappointed that Sanders had a similar response as Trump has had by weakly denouncing the violence and immediately making excuses for his supporters. But, let's not act like Trump supporters haven't been violent. In the videos of the last protests, I couldn't tell the Trump and Sanders supporters apart unless they had signs that showed their affiliation.
Sanders is not likely to win the nomination, and a vote for a third party candidate only risks putting Trump in office. I don't know if Trump is racist, but he sure does go out of his way to appeal to racists. Even without his racist attacks against Hispanics and sexist attacks against women, the guy has said nothing that appeals to me. What little policy proposals he's made don't make sense or wouldn't work; he speaks gibberish most of the time. As someone who did a whole master's in security studies, I can realize that he knows nothing about international relations. While many politicians tend to flip flop, Trump has changed his mind on almost every single issue multiple times. Sometimes, he changes his mind within the same day. I don't think he really has any true convictions. He just says whatever he thinks people want to hear. I'm still wondering if his campaign is performance art, a practical joke, or a plan to put Clinton into office. It's hard to take him seriously.
Trump is intentionally or unintentionally appealing to the lowest common denominator. An analysis of the candidate's announcements of candidacy showed that Trump spoke at the lowest level: fourth grade. He attracts people who don't want to spend too much energy on brain power. They don't care that he doesn't really have a plan for anything. All they see is that he's a billionaire (one born with a silver spoon in his mouth and had his companies bankrupt four times) and someone saying that he's going to make America great again. Plans to try to fix America's problems are too complicated for them to understand.
As for the Robert Byrd thing, I live in the South. At least half of the elderly white people around me were probably KKK members, white supremacists, KKK sympathizers, or segregationists. It would take too much energy to try to avoid all of them for beliefs that were held by many southerners decades ago.
