From Army Vet math phobe to Engineering professor
#1
You all may have already heard of her. She is my hero!

https://youtu.be/O96fE1E-rf8

Sure alot of what she says is common sense. But her history is indeed fascinating. I find that I am really enjoying learning statistics in preparation for my biostats course. I feel very prepared! I bought the manga book on stats (highly rec!!!!) as well as working through Saylor's course. I also have tutor who I meet online with once a week and we are already on to advanced topics beyond stats. I thought I would stop seeing him but enjoying it so much I am on to even bigger things. Who would have thought? I didn't. One great thing about my tutor is that our sessions are recorded and I can go back and review if I am still confused.

Barbara Oakley also had a great podcast I listened to. She is on board with online learning..especially for math! Especially if the lecture is taped and you can review it as much as you like. I loved that little bit about online learning in the podcast. Many people still down our way of learning. I find for me, that learning math online is better for me than in class where I sat confused, too scared to raise my hand because I just did NOT get it. OR raising my hand just so that the prof can roll his eyes at me because what he was explaining was common sense. Not to me. Watch the TedX talk and become motivated. I was a math phobe as well and starting to enjoy it. All it takes is some good material and in my case, someone who explained it better than my old college professor could...
