Portfolio tip: including free MOOCs in the portfolio
I just wanted to briefly discuss the idea of including free MOOCs as evidence in a portfolio. I think it is a really good idea for a couple reasons.
1. The obvious reason: you can say you did the MOOC. If there is a certificate and you want it for some other reason, that's fine. But I am not convinced that you have to spend money on the cert if it's just for the portfolio.
2. The not-obvious reason: if you do the MOOC before writing your narrative, the MOOC may help you organize your thinking and give you lots of vocabulary to use in the narrative. For example, right now I am taking the Coursera MOOC called, "Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination." It is astonishing how many of these concepts I will be able to include in the narrative based on my actual experience. The MOOC is giving me the vocabulary and concepts to "hang" my experiences on. I hope that makes sense. I'm writing down certain relevant experiences with my clients as I watch the videos (which are really good, BTW!). I'm so happy that I'm doing this MOOC. It is going to make writing the narrative super easy.

BSBA/Accounting TESU (2016). MSA UIUC (2018).
Need help with portfolios? I earned 18 credits at TESU through portfolio evaluations. Nine of those were for upper level accounting courses. My advice for PLA/portfolios: TESU portfolio tips The first post has the Portfolio Checklist I created. Page ten has the actual narrative I wrote to receive credit for ACC-440.
Using Straighterline's Financial Accounting as a substitute for TESU's Intermediate Accounting I? Don't do it if you are an accounting major and/or want your CPA license. They are not the same course and I think TESU has erred in accepting the SL course as Intermediate I. I made this discovery here: Intermediate Accounting II.
