Charter Oak State College - New Degree in B.S. Business Administration

Tedium Wrote:I'm finishing my BA in the Fall. Then I'll be able to start testing out of the BSBA. Just need to make sure at least 30 of my credits for my BSBA are gained after I graduate. Six are going to be from COSC, so I can get financial aid, so I'll just take MIS from COSC if need be. I was already trying to debate which second class to take there, so if that is the only one I can't easily test out of then the decision is made for me.

The problem is that the closest testing center for DSST that delivers computer based testing is 2 1/2 hours away from me. the next closest is an hour and they only do pen and paper, and the other one also an hour away charges outrageous testing center fees to the tune of ~$65. I'd rather know my results when I finish, so that I can make other arrangements immediately if I happen to fail. Waiting on my College Composition scores is wrecking my nerves enough, and I know I passed that one. I can only imagine my stress levels for a test I was less sure of.

Everything else has a UExcel counterpart. For the last business elective credit, I was going to take the Federal Income Taxation TECEP, seeing as it is open book. I appreciate the feedback on the UExcels. That lightens my mental load a bit. So, I'll be taking mostly CLEP and UExcels, one open book TECEP, ALEKS Business Stats, and two COSC courses. Not the cheapest plan around, but not the most expensive. Certainly less stressful worrying about results. And it will be good to know that I have the DSSTs to fall back on if the unthinkable does happen.

If you're struggling to find a 2nd class for financial aid purposes, MIS will be fine. I'll say that the DSST MIS is very straightforward if you're an average proficiency with tech - pass rates are around 97% percent for this one. If you're looking to save money, if you can do the DSST in MIS (if you're comfortable in passing it), you could find a 2nd course in UL Business Elective through COSC.

Also, if you decide to forgo the DSST in Business Ethics, you'll have to find a substitute for that too, though that exam is also another easy one.

I'd say that 2.5 hours is not that bad travel time especially if you have someone who can drive you and study while in the car. I ha the same problem with the DSSTs that they're not easy to locate/convenient, but I was able to take time off from work to do it, and traveled about an hour but it was worth it for the money saved. Actually for DSST MIS, I took a paper version, and I got the results back in about 3 weeks. Since these DSSTs are pretty straightforward, you'll generally feel/know that you passed it (I mean with DSSTs you basically need to get a 50% on the exam to pass!), but in your case, if you could make the 2.5 hour trip, it could spare you the wait/anxiety of waiting.

Yes, with COSC the general idea is that it's not going to be the cheapest, but it's going to be somewhere in the middle. As a result, it ends up being a comfortable balance between price, and convenience.
