Congratulations on being recognized by Phi Theta Kappa for your academic excellence at a two-year college.

Using information obtained from CollegeFish.org, we have identified you as a student who may be interested in Yale University’s Eli Whitney Students Program (EWSP). The EWSP is a small undergraduate program designed for nontraditional students who have had their education interrupted for five or more years at some point during their educational careers. If you plan on transferring to a four-year college and are seeking a rigorous and intensely intellectual environment, I encourage you to consider Yale and learn more about the EWSP by clicking here. Please note that the deadline to submit the application is April 1 for Fall 2014 entrance, and you can find application instructions and the online application here.

The Eli Whitney Students Program

The EWSP was conceived with the same mission as that for Yale College as a whole: the education of leaders who will make contributions to society and the world. Whitney students take classes with other undergraduates, and earn either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from Yale. They have access to virtually all Yale College programs and facilities except for undergraduate housing. But unlike other students in Yale College, Whitney students may choose to attend as either full-time or part-time students, giving them great flexibility. Yale also makes available generous financial aid, awarded solely on the basis of demonstrated financial need.

There are 20 to 30 Whitney students at Yale every year, ranging in age from their mid-twenties to their fifties. Many Whitney students either applied directly from community colleges or have attended two-year colleges at some point during their academic careers. Students in the EWSP come from all walks of life – veterans, entrepreneurs, community or social activists, journalists, and business professionals; others have devoted themselves to raising a family. Together, and as individuals, they bring a plethora of life experiences to campus, and add immeasurably to the intellectual discussions inside and outside of the classroom.

Yale University

Located in New Haven, Connecticut, Yale University is an Ivy League institution renowned for its centuries-old commitment to the liberal arts and sciences. With a university endowment of $21 billion, Yale’s resources are matched by only a handful of research universities across the globe. Yale places a uniquely strong emphasis on making those resources available to undergraduates. This combination of limitless possibility and individual attention produces graduates poised to become leaders in any career, anywhere in the world.

Admission to Yale

Most students considering Yale want to know their chances of admission, as Yale’s selection process is undeniably one of the most competitive in the world. Without reviewing your complete application, we cannot predict the likelihood of your being admitted to Yale. We can, however, let you know that we receive approximately 100 applications for the EWSP each year and only 4 to 8 candidates are usually admitted. Academic strength is our first consideration in evaluating candidates. While some Whitney applicants may have had mixed academic performance in the past, we do expect students to show very strong recent academic performance, with grades in the A range in demanding college courses. An applicant’s interdisciplinary academic strength (especially in writing and quantitative reasoning) is important. Additionally Yale looks for nontraditional students who show strong intellectual depth and curiosity, exceptional motivation, energy, leadership, community involvement and/or professional achievement. The admissions committee is especially interested in candidates who have had a profound, positive, and lasting impact on others and who will continue to enrich their communities in college and beyond.

We hope that you will explore Yale as a possibility for your future. Meanwhile, we offer our best wishes for your continued success. To be placed on our mailing list, please click here. Remember that the application deadline for fall 2014 entrance is April 1.

Don't miss out on something great just because it might also be difficult.
