I recommend signing up now and paying the $20 fee. You can contact ALEKS and request a refund if you're unable to complete it by the 10/31 expiration date.
Once you sign up, ALEKS will also auto-generate and e-mail you login details for a Master account. The Master account is used for managing the student account -- you can issue tests from it and check progress.
The student account is what you'll be using to complete your assessment. The first assessment will be an initial assessment and if you get less than 70% on it you'll get a pie chart showing all the topics you need to work on. Take notes and learn what you don't understand. Click "Explain" and you will get explanations for each problem, do not skip anything you don't understand.
You can either wait for ALEKS to issue you an assessment once you've worked through enough topics or you can continue issuing an assessment any time through the Masters account. To issue an assessment from the Masters account, you can click "View Progress Report" and under "More Options" you'll see the Request a New Assessment Now link. Just click that to issue the assessment to your Student account.
If you haven't already, make sure you register an account at the ACE Credit Registry and Transcript System at https://www2.acenet.edu/credit/?fuseacti...ripts.main so you can transfer your credits from ALEKS once you have a passing grade.
Good luck!
It's good through 10/31 (search ALEKS on ACE through https://www2.acenet.edu/credit/?fuseacti...chCriteria to confirm), now go and sign up if you really need the credits!
