you can go to the excelsior site, create a free login id and download pdf "exam content guides"

there is a content guide for each exam
the content guide usually names 2 or 3 recommend text books and a saylor or coursea course that should be used to prepare for the exam

they give a general breakdown and a specific breakdown
for example, for Abnormal Psychology they say

Introduction and Basic Issues covers 25% of the exam
Disorders 60%
Treatment, Prevention, Legal Issues 15%

then they'll go into detail and say
for Mood Disorders study Chapter 5 of textbook A
for Substance Abuse disorders study Chaper 10 of textbook B
for Legal and Ethical Issues study Chapter 16 of textbook C

then they'll give you 25 sample multiple choice questions so you can get a feel of the kind of questions that will be on the exam
they give you the answers to the sample questions and tell you if the question falls under the Mood Disorder category or the Anxiety Disorder category or the Lifespan Disorder category or ...

for some exams they have practice exams - I haven't tried any, but I think they're full versions

I found the study guides very helpful, but I've never bought any of their recommended textbooks
I have 2 generic Intro to Psych textbooks, the Barrons EZ 101 Psych and the Princeton Guide to the Psych GRE and some videos from The Great Courses and I've found those were usually enough for all the CLEP and ECE exams
