Having only done ALEKS, I can only say it this way, ALEKS is cheaper and allows you to re-learn the material until you are at the 70% mark on their quizzes. It might be worth the $20 to try ALEKS and see how bad it is. If you do well with it and don't need too much brush up on your skills you can finish more than one course for that same price. The nice thing about the CLEP exam is that it is six credits, the downfall is it does nothing to work on your skills so ALEKS might be the answer for you (it was for me).
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.
