For CLEP specifically I recommend the Official CLEP Study Guide available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and others. It has every exam inside with study ideas and a practice exam. For both CLEP & DSST you'll want to check out instantcert and free-clep-prep.com
You can also find helpful info on the CLEP & DSST websites:

The method you choose will depend on how familiar you are with a given subject. If you know the material then you might be able to take it without study (not that I recommend that).
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.
