Why are we still in Afghanistan?

Read James Michenor's "Caravans" to get an understanding of what and who you are dealing with in Afghanistan. These folks are tough, singleminded mountain people. I read Michenor's book back in the 80s before the Soviets moved in and tried to change things. I knew they would fail, just as many others had failed before them and just as we will fail to make a difference. The Afghans are just like the Vietnamese, they have a long history of being occupied and under the rule of others and just like the Vietnamese, the Afghans will outlast the latest incursion and return to their former ways.
I appreciate the work our military forces are doing over there, but its our leaders who are to blame for putting Americans where they are not wanted (and keeping them there). These leaders are sorely lacking in historical good sense - They should be reading Michenor's book to get a better understanding of the Afghan people and their leaders.
