What I gather is you download some info for the exam and then you can take a test at home. Is this right? Someone said they did some in an hour. Is that typical? If not, how much time should I expect these to take?
Yes you take the exams from your home on the computer. They are open book, un-timed, and no proctor is needed. When I did the FEMA classes for my PDS certificate I averaged about an hour per exam. The time it takes you will depend mostly on how quickly you read and process information.
Can I use them as general ed. electives or would they have to be free electives?
In general you will only be able to use FEMAs as free electives. There are some exceptions such as TESC's AAS in Environmental Safety and Security Technology degree where I believe the FEMAs are used to satisfy degree requirements instead of free electives. As always YMMV.
Would there be a problem with me being 16 and not yet graduated from high school?
I don't see any reason that it would be a problem but again YMMV.
Do I need to enroll in TESC before I start doing them?
No you do not need to be an enrolled student to take FEMAs, CLEPs, or DSSTs.
EDIT: Also is it true that it's 100% free with TESC and I don't need to transfer them to the other college first?
At this time TESC accepts the classes directly from EMI (FEMA) without having to transcribe them through another college. Also there was some posts recently about COSC beginning to accept FEMAs raw as well. However the policies of any school are subject to change with fairly minimal notice. Also please note that while there is no extra cost to transfer the credits to TESC you will still be subject to the standard fees applicable to TESC students.
How do I know which courses TESC will award credit for? Is there a limit of 25? The only info I could find from TESC website was it said you can get 1-25 credits from FEMA.
SandraNC made a list of the TESC FEMA course equivalencies that can be found here. http://degreeplanners.com/media/FEMA_Aug_2011.pdf I believe the max is 25 credits but again YMMV.
Thank you!
