I might just take a stab at trying to learn Portuguese as well, (in between watching episodes of Bones, House and Dexter of course). When I was in Korea, I went to a Brazilian restaurant and actually carried a conversation with the Brazilian waitress. She didn't know English, just Korean and Portuguese, but between my Spanglish and her Portuguese we actually understood each other. I agree, both languages are very similar and overlap a lot.
