Not sure if anybody else mentioned this, but PLA courses don't have exams or textbooks. There is a lot of writing, since you have to document what you know, and what you know has to be at a college level. For me, I prefer the PLA, but I also like to write. If you don't like to write or are not a good writer than it's not a good choice.
Another advantage of PLA is the sheer volume of classes available. Here are the PLA courses in the TESC catalog:

I recently discovered that there are actually MANY more courses that can be taken this way, but they are not standard TESC courses in the catalog. You can access the database of these PLA courses here:
